Breaking: NBC has reportedly pulled the plug on its longrunning legal series, 'Law & Order,' Deadline is reporting.

Sources for the online news site claim the decision was made due to NBC's upcoming development slate and 'Law & Order''s sagging ratings, which have been weak all season.

According to an updated report from the NY Times' Media Decoder blog, producer Dick Wolf's production company broke the news to showmembers via telephone this afternoon. Castmembers were also informed, the report says.

If confirmed, 'Law & Order' would end after 20 seasons on NBC, thus preventing it from breaking 'Gunsmoke''s record as the longest-running drama in television history.

NBC declined to comment on the story, though sources for Media Decoder claim that the network and Wolf are "still having conversations" about the show's future. Stay tuned to TV Squad for more updates.

As previously reported, the fate of 'Law & Order' was called into question in March over contract disputes with its cable partner, TNT.

On the bright side, Deadline is also reporting that the latest 'L&O' spinoff, 'Law & Order: Los Angeles,' will premiere next season, though, again, no official word has been made.

if we lose L&O: SVU I will have to hurt someone. That show is the best one, imo.
