Top 100 Star Wars Characters Empty
PostSubject: Top 100 Star Wars Characters   Top 100 Star Wars Characters EmptySat 18 Sep 2010, 4:00 pm

Note: Going to do 10 a day, starting with #100 working my way down to #1.

#100
Doctor Evazan
First Appearance: Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

One meets such colorful characters in seedy bars. That truth applies all the more in the Star Wars universe, where aliens from hundreds of worlds gather to drink and be merry. But as always, one should stay safe and mindful in these situations. Some of these colorful characters just might have the death sentence in 12 systems.

Luke Skywalker learned this the hard way when he met Dr. Cornelius Evazan in the Mos Eisley Tavern. All Luke knew was that Evazan was a surly, disfigured man with a mean temper. His associate, Ponda Baba, was even meaner. What Luke didn't know was that Evazan was a rogue surgeon infamous for maiming and killing his patients. The duo attempted to intimidate young Luke, but instead found themselves staring down the blade of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Evazan and Baba escaped the tavern minus Baba's arm. After Evazan failed to find a suitable cybernetic replacement, Baba swore revenge on his former partner. Their rivalry persisted for years. Ultimately, Evazan discovered the secret to Immortality. He replaced Baba's ruined body, the two buried the hatchet, and both survived to see the fall of the Empire and the birth of the New Republic.

Oola
First Appearance: Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

Oola is -- sorry, was -- Jabba's most prized slave girl. Not much is known about her background outside of Jedi, but we do know that she was trained at one of the finest dancing academies on Ryloth. That is until she was tricked into dancing for Jabba the Hutt some time later. Little did she know that once she took the job, there'd be no backing out.

Dressed in a flimsy net costume and fed only on scraps, Oola would spend the rest of her days dancing her green ass off in the slums of Jabba's palace. Then the fateful day came when she couldn't entertain her slimy overlord anymore... Oola, Oola, Oola. For someone so skilled in the art of dance, you certainly know nothing about staying alive, do you? Couldn't even defend yourself from a rancor? Hell, Luke did that with a bone and a rock. C'mon!

#98
Yaddle
First Appearance: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

It's a common trait of Star Wars that minor background characters in the movies go on to have much more interesting lives in the Expanded Universe. One of the more memorable examples of this is Yaddle.

Yoda's folk might not look so good at 900 years, but their positively spry at the young age of 500. Yaddle was a member of this same, nameless species and Yoda's colleague on the Jedi Council. She trained several young Padawans and fought alongside some of the greatest Jedi of the day, including Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker.

Yaddle's early career sounds like the fodder for true Dark Side material: 300 years before the movies, Yaddle was a Padawan herself. Her master was killed and Yaddle was imprisoned by her would-be target. She spent 100 years trapped in a small cave while her jailers and the galaxy at large forgot about her entirely. Yaddle put her copious free time to good use, though. By the time she escaped a century later, her communion with the Force had become complete.

By the time Yaddle returned to the Jedi Order, her abilities were deemed so great as to need no further training. She then began a slightly more restful career of serving on the Council and training younger generations. That's not to say she was adverse to occasionally getting her hands dirty. Yaddle served valiantly during the murky and uncertain years leading up to the Clone Wars.

Ultimately, she sacrificed her life to save an entire planet.

#97
Jaxxon
First Appearance: Star Wars #8

No, this isn't Bucky O'Hare, though we suppose readers can be forgiven for thinking so. Star Wars is home to its own red-suited, green-rabbit, blaster-wielding-space-adventurer. Jaxxon also beat Bucky to the scene by a number of years.

Jaxxon was one of the earliest additions to the fledgling Expanded Universe. He first appeared in Marvel's Star Wars #8. The story, heavily influenced by the classic Kurosawa film The Seven Samurai, saw Han Solo gather a posse of smugglers and mercenaries to defend a tiny village. Jaxxon's skill with a blaster in this battle was rivaled only by his talent for kicking fools in the face.

Jaxxon reappeared several times in these early chapters of the Star Wars comic. He formed a band of like-minded adventurers called the Star-Hoppers. In another of their adventures, one of the Star-Hoppers was mistaken for Luke Skywalker, forcing Jaxxon to clash with a gang of bounty hunters. Those hunters soon learned what a mistake it was to face off with Jaxxon when he was hopping mad.

Thanks to his goofy appearance and the fact that Marvel's Star Wars series is largely ignored by modern writers, Jaxxon has been out of the spotlight for decades. And yet, he sticks in our minds after all this time thanks to his quirky humor and unique looks.

#96
RX-24 (Rex)
First Appearance: Star Tours

RX-24, also known as Rex, is hands-down the worst pilot in the history of Star Wars. This RX-series pilot droid is a rookie behind the wheel and perpetually stuck in his first flight of the Endor Express for the Star Tours Travel Agency.

Voiced by Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman), Rex crashes the ship before even leaving the docking bay, and it just gets worse from there. Those who have been on the Star Tours Disney simulator ride certainly have a spot in their hearts for the little droid that finds just as much trouble in the five-minute ride as the whole Star Wars crew does in A New Hope. "Sorry, folks! I'm sure to do better next time!" he assures us at the end of every ride, but the question we ask is: Will he ever get a second chance?

#95
Noa Briqualon
First Appearance: Ewoks: The Battle for Endor

Why is Noa on this list? Because he was played by Wilfred Freakin' Brimley, that's why!

Any Star Wars character portrayed by the legendary actor and oatmeal pitchman is a must inclusion in our book. Not to mention, Noa -- introduced in the TV-Movie Ewoks: The Battle for Endor -- added an important missing element to the Star Wars universe: glasses! That's right, not everyone in a galaxy far, far away has perfect eyesight, thank you very much. Noa was there to represent the rest of us, and make us ponder if there are any Jedi rocking some lenses out there.

On top of that, Noa was your dependably lovable crotchety old guy with a heart of gold who helped protect a little girl whose family had just been massacred (in an oddly dark element for a family-aimed TV movie). Plus, when the oh-so-evil King Terak came at Noa with a sword, Noa went one-on-one with the guy -- using his walking staff as his weapon, no less! That makes him the most bad-ass character Brimley ever played, minus Hard Target.

#94
Malakili (Rancor Keeper)
First Appearance: Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

Jabba's Palace isn't just the galaxy's gathering ground for wretched scum and villainy; it's also a place where enterprising zoologists can study and bond with the most exotic of creatures. Not that Malakili had much choice in the matter. This former member of the Circus Horrificus was sold to Jabba after a particularly nasty animal incident led to the death of 12 audience members.

Malakili seemed to find his calling, luckily. His kind, gentle nature won the friendship of Jabba's Rancor. Where most saw the Rancor as a sign of impending doom, Malakili saw a true companion. Their bond was so strong that Malakili attempted to betray Jabba and escape with the Rancor when Jabba announced his intention to pit it against a Krayt Dragon in open combat.

Ultimately, it was all pointless. Luke Skywalker brought death to the misunderstood creature. A devastated Malakili remained in the palace to mourn while the rest of Jabba's organization fell into chaos. Eventually he fled the palace with the cook, Porcellus, and the two opened a renowned restaurant in Mos Eisley. Malakali found his freedom, but at the cost of his best friend.

See, this is why no one likes those Jedi jerks.

#93
Boss Nass
First Appearance: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Known as the fat, green frog-alien that lords over the smaller, pink-orange frog-aliens, Boss Nass is the supreme ruler and council head of Otoh Gunga on Naboo. He also harbors a nasty habit of spitting all over those commanding an audience. Dude's not exactly a charmer.

But before he became head of Otoh Gunga, Nass walked a rather eclectic career path. Starting as an army sergeant, the Gungan later became an engineer and an energy miner shortly after that. However, he wasn't truly recognized by his people until he entered a taxing physical challenge in the Gungan Festival of Warriors, the Big Nasty Free-for-All (we can't make this stuff up, folks). By the time elections for Top Boss were held, Nass had garnered enough attention to win by a landslide. Following his heralded strategy tactics during the Battle of Naboo, Nass went on to colonize the planet's moon, Ohma-D'un.

Nass went on to play a very active role in the development of the Gungan race and its politics. However, the reality is that Nass only acquires about 20 minutes of screen time in the prequels, thus making him slightly less annoying than Jar Jar Binks.

#92
PROXY
First Appearance: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

"I am Imperial training droid Prototype Ten -- designated "PROXY."

First appearing in the 2008 videogame Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, PROXY quickly likened himself to the Star Wars fanbase with his unique skills. Directed by Darth Vader to continually train his apprentice, PROXY is a prototype holodroid who is able to project the appearance of people in his database around his form. Using this skill, PROXY trains Starkiller (Galen Marek) by ambushing him and forcing him into heated battles. PROXY's harsh training methods were conceived by the game's developers to show players the brutal nature of Sith training, in which even your best friend can be your enemy.

While his relationship with Starkiller is important, fans of the Star Wars films like PROXY mainly because the holographic models that he presents allows them to see characters from the Star Wars universe in a game that wouldn't normally contain them. It's not very often that a droid likens themselves to the fanboys out there, and for that PROXY gets a gold star and a slot in our Top 100.

#91
Dak
First Appearance: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

"Right now, I feel like I could take on the whole Empire myself."

And with those immortal words, Dak Ralter sealed his fate while becoming one of our favorite characters.

This youthful exuberance was immediately put to the test when Dak and Luke attempted to defend the Hoth Rebel base from the Empire's offense -- inside the cockpit of their T-47 Airspeeder. This defense was short-lived, as an AT-AT shot and killed Dak, downing the Airspeeder. To add insult to injury, Dak's body was filed under "closed casket" when an AT-AT Godzilla-stomped on it and the Airspeeder. At least Dak, in death, has the bragging rights of working with future Jedi Luke Skywalker as the gunner for the leading speeder.

On top of all that, his death serves as a warning to generations of children watching The Empire Strikes Back, who now know the danger of pure unadulterated optimism. The Rebel Allience misses you, oh great Cautionary Tale Dak.

#90
Jek Porkins
First Appearance: Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope

Flying under the call-sign Red Six, Lieutenant Porkins proved that the Rebel Alliance did not discriminate against the overweight or the slovenly when drafting pilots. During the Battle of Yavin, as the tiny Rebel fleet attempted to destroy the planet-killing Death Star, Porkins' X-Wing suffered from a mechanical problem which left him unable to dodge the laser blasts of the enemy. Still, Porkins was a confident and brave soldier until the bitter end, insisting that despite his ship's problem he "could hold it" and "I'm alright." Those would be his final words as he and his vessel broke apart into fiery pieces above the surface of the Death Star.

Jek Porkins, porcine battler of bad guys, you are missed.

#89
Max Rebo
First Appearance: Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

Only in the land of Star Wars can a chubby blue elephant become an intergalactic musical sensation.

Max Rebo is the front man and organ player for the Max Rebo Band. The band made their home on Tatooine, teaming with Sy Snootles (clearly the Lady Gaga of a galaxy far, far away) and frequently entertaining the members of Jabba's entourage.

Max Rebo was never a savvy businessman. He was perfectly content to accept food as payment for his musical services. That never sat well with Snootles or the other band members. It didn't help that the group was frequently the target of violence. When it comes to being the biggest band on Tatooine, Figrin Dan and the Modal Nodes don't eff around.

Max Rebo and his band were there during Jabba's final days, witnessing the death of the Rancor and the explosive battle at the Sarlaac. Despite his rotund frame, Max was able to hightail it out of there before Jabba's pleasure skiff blew up.

The Max Rebo Band eventually went their separate ways. After a brief but successful solo career, Max retired and opened his own restaurant. Perhaps he had finally found his true calling as an artist

#88
Gilad Pellaeon
First Appearance: Heir to the Empire

In life, there are men who are born to lead and others who are meant to follow. A good military organization has need of both. Gilad Pellaeon distinguished himself during the Clone Wars and eventually rose to the rank of Admiral. When Palpatine fell, Pellaeon and his crew were lost in uncertainty.

That changed with the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Thrawn made Pellaeon's Star Destroyer his personal flagship and quickly set about rebuilding the shattered fragments of the Empire. Pellaeon finally had a true visionary to follow again, and he thrived in his new role as second-in-command.

Ultimately, Thrawn was defeated, too. Pellaeon attempted to form a new alliance with Admiral Daala and her fleet, but again found his ally inadequate to the job. It soon fell on Pellaeon to guide the last remaining vestiges of a once mighty Empire. Pellaeon knew he would never be the true, definitive leader Palpatine and Thrawn were. His greatest act was to sign a truce with the New Republic, forming the new Galactic Alliance.

Unlike many of his colleagues, for Pellaeon the Empire was never about power or personal gain. It was about ensuring order in a chaotic universe. He continued to fight for order throughout the Yuuzhan Vong conflict until his tragic assassination.

#87
Zam Wesell
First Appearance: Star Wars: Jango Fett

Not every bounty hunter can be as awesome as the Fett clan. Luckily, in a place as overrun with scum and villainy as the Star Wars galaxy, there's plenty of room for bounty hunters of all shapes and sizes. Zam Wesell happens to literally come in many shapes and sizes.

Wesell is a Clawdite, a reptilian humanoid with the ability to shapeshift. As a youngster, she trained in the ancient order of the Mabari, gaining impressive fighting skills in the process. She then parlayed her natural and learned abilities into a successful career as a bounty hunter. Wesell's distinguished career eventually earned the respect of Jango Fett himself. The two frequently partnered on a variety of dangerous missions. Having Fett at her back helped make Wesell's name one of the most feared in the galaxy.

Wesell's final mission was another collaboration with Fett. He subcontracted Wesell's services in an attempt to assassinate Padme Amidala. Unfortunately for Wesell, this attracted the attention of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. After a mad chase through the seedy sections of Coruscant, Wesell was killed by her partner to prevent her spilling the beans. Still, she had a good run.

#86
Anakin Solo
First Appearance: Dark Empire II

Anakin Solo is the third child of Han Solo and Leia Organa. He was named after his grandfather, a man who was both one of the galaxy's greatest villains and its ultimate savior at varying points. The choice of name proved to be an auspicious one.

Anakin's life was plagued with uncertainty. Not having the benefit of a twin sibling, he lacked the confidence of Jaina and Jacen Solo. Anakin also feared falling to the Dark Side like his namesake. The fact that Emperor Palpatine once tried to make Anakin his new host body certainly didn't help matters.

Despite his personal misgivings, Anakin led a distinguished life as a Jedi trainee. His true test of greatness came during the Yuuzhan Vong War. Anakin didn't have such a great start, as Chewbacca sacrificed his own life to save Anakin's in the opening conflict. This had the unfortunate side effect of turning Han against his younger son. With a mountain of guilt and plenty to prove, Anakin set about proving to his father that Chewie's sacrifice wasn't wasted. And prove it he did.

Anakin fought bravely in a number of battles, helping to slowly drive back the Vong invasion. He made the ultimate sacrifice himself in the final effort to destroy the Vong. Once again, a man named Anakin ensured the galaxy would live to see peace once more. He and Jacen also proved that Han and Leia's children have a very short shelf life.

#85
General Madine
First Appearance: Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

Some of the most distinguished heroes of the Rebel Alliance began their careers as members of the enemy. Crix Madine was once a highly decorated Imperial officer who led the elite Storm Commandos. Madine increasingly grew to question the righteousness of his cause, however. After receiving the order to poison a planet with the highly lethal Candorian Plague, Madine decided enough was enough.

The Imperial officer defected and became a Rebel agent. It wasn't an easy task, and both Kyle Katarn and the members of Rogue Squadron were called upon to ensure his safe journey. But once he finally reached the Rebels, Madine proved to be one of their greatest assets. His knowledge of Imperial tactics and weaponry gave the freedom fighters a much-needed combat boost. Madine literally wrote the book on fighting the Empire.

It was Madine who spearheaded the assault on the second Death Star's shield generator and helped deal a crippling blow to the Empire. He continued to hold a prominent role among the former Rebels as they worked to establish the New Republic. Sadly, he was killed in one of the many conflicts with the fractured Imperial Remnant.

#84
Cade Skywalker
First Appearance: Star Wars: Legacy #1

It's unusual for someone in the Star Wars universe to bear the surname "Skywalker" and not be destined to shape the course of the galaxy. Anakin Skywalker and his descendants number among the most powerful and influential Jedi of all time; it's a legacy that would be passed down hundreds of years to the most recent Skywalker, Cade.

It's also a Legacy that Cade would just as soon avoid.

Cade is an oddity among his genetic line, in that he is neither a virtuous hero nor a force of malevolent evil. He's part of a more recent breed of Expanded Universe stars that don't easily fit into the hero and villain categories. As a young boy, Cade saw the Jedi Order devastated by another Sith attack. His father was one of many to fall in battle against Darth Krayt's forces.

Now a grown man, Cade would just as soon pursue a carefree life of bounty hunting and drug addiction. The pesky appearances from his ghostly ancestor Luke have done little to change his mind. But despite his best efforts at obscurity, Cade has been drawn into the latest battle for the galaxy.

Darth Krayt covets Cade's abilities, as only Cade has the ability to restore life through the Force and heal Krayt from his debilitating infection. If Cade doesn't entirely trust or support the Jedi, he certainly has no love for Krayt. Cade is slowly coming to accept his destiny and join the continued battle between light and dark.

As a character who breaks the mold and offers something different to seasoned Star Wars veterans, we have to give Cade Skywalker due credit.

#83
Jerec
First Appearance: Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II

The Rule of Two ensures that there can be only two Sith at any given point in the galaxy. That never stopped Palpatine from relying on a number of "Dark Jedi," Force users who were not official members of the Sith Order but still prone to great evil. Jerec was one of these. His power was nearly as great as Darth Vader's, and his ambition for more power rivaled that of Palpatine himself.

Jerec began his career as a Jedi archaeologist, training under historian/cranky librarian Jocasta Nu. After the birth of the Empire, Jerec switched gears and became an Inquisitor for Palpatine. He killed many Jedi and other enemies of the state during this time, including Rebel leader Morgan Katarn. In doing so, Jerec made a powerful enemy in Morgan's son, Kyle.

Jerec's fondest wish, which hailed back to his archeology days, was to find the fabled Valley of the Jedi and harness the power of the countless souls contained there. Together with a group of fellow Dark Jedi, Jerec embarked on a quest to find the Valley. However, Katarn was on his trail. One by one, Katarn cut down Jerec's minions until only he and Jerec remained. Despite Jerec's vastly augmented powers and Katarn's relative inexperience, the villain was cut down in combat. His body was obliterated, leaving his soul to eternal torment in the Valley.

It's a bad end for an intriguing villain. Jerec's most interesting quality, aside from his own ambition, was his knack for bringing out the best and worst within Katarn.

#82
Talon Karrde
First Appearance: Heir to the Empire

Once upon a time, men like Han Solo and Lando Calrissian were on top of the smuggling world. When men like them go legit, someone has to step up and fill the void. Illegal goods aren't going to smuggle themselves. And who else will make the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs?

Talon Karrde proved to be the right man, in the right place, at the right time. Already a successful smuggler and entrepreneur during the reign of the Empire, Karrde found himself awash with opportunity after the fall of Palpatine and rival gangsters like Jabba the Hutt and Prince Xizor. Karrde's organization quickly grew to be one of the most powerful and wide-reaching in the galaxy.

What has separated Karrde throughout his career from his many competitors and associates is that he has an underlying honorable streak, even if he does try his best to hide it. Karrde's strict policy of neutrality was tested when he was forced to hide Luke Skywalker from Grand Admiral Thrawn. Karrde was slowly caught up in the growing galactic conflict. He remained a mediator during the early years of the New Republic/Imperial Remnant truce and a force to be reckoned with during the Yuuzhan Vong War.

As Karrde grew older, however, he found himself siding more and more with the Jedi even as the galaxy at large seemed to turn against them. Having reached the height of power and influence, Karrde has learned that things like honor matter more.

#81
Darth Traya
First Appearance: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords

Leave it to Darth Traya to explain literally everything in analogy and metaphor. This Gray Jedi speaks only in cryptic messages, her monologues of moral guidance wrought with "maybes" and "supposes." Nevertheless, Traya is still one tough cookie, and if she has Darth Nihilus shaking in his robes, there's probably more to her than a missing limb and a couple of old-woman braids.

Known as the Jedi master who taught the famous Darth Revan and later the Jedi Exile, the previously titled Master Kreia was once an esteemed member of the Old Republic's Jedi Order. Always treading the line between good and evil, Kreia was eventually banished from the Jedi Temple and subsequently led a life of exile before succumbing to the dark side and joining the ragtag crew of the Ebon Hawk in search of the Lost Jedi.

Kreia spends most of her time following the Jedi Exile around in the Xbox sequel Knights of the Old Republic II, and she usually won't shut up about it either. Often scolding and bogging your character down with a menagerie of guidelines and tireless words of "wisdom," Kreia eventually betrays you and reveals herself as Darth Traya, the leader of a hidden Sith cult on Malacor V. There she tries to persuade you to... well, we're not really sure what she wants from you, but she's able to telekinetically fight with three lightsabers at a time, so that's pretty badass.
