Google Doodle Celebrates the Ice Cream Sundae's 119th Anniversary Icecreamsundae11-hp

When hopping over to Google this morning, we were surprised to see the small logo indicating a doodle was present – given that the big G only just doodled Robert Bunsen’s birthday on Thursday.

So what’s this doodle in celebration of? The ice cream sundae, no less. Yes, you read correctly, Google is marking the 119th anniversary of the invention of this chilled dessert with sprinkles aplenty.

There is some controversy about exactly who invented the first ice cream sundae, but the first historically documented effort came about on April 3rd 1892, in Ithaca, New York. When an ice cream truck collided with a syrup tanker.

Of course not (the first motor truck wasn’t even invented then, for one thing). It was actually when Chester Platt served church minister John Scott some ice cream at his pharmacy’s day and night “Soda Fountain”.

Platt decided to top the ice cream with candied cherries and syrup, leading to the birth of the first Cherry Sunday, which both men thought delicious. Thereafter, the ice cream speciality was served every Sunday, branching out into strawberry and chocolate flavours.

There may, however, be another reason behind the doodle other than the celebration of ice cream, syrup and wafer heaven.

Google’s successor to Gingerbread is codenamed Ice Cream, and this could be a reference to the fact that the refreshed OS is on the way this quarter. Or that it’s going to be called Ice Cream Sundae as its full name, perhaps.

So do you like to eat them and if so how do you make them or buy them if at an ice cream shop?
