Some may know John Hennigan by his stage name, “John Morrison,” or his nicknames “The Prince of Parkour” or “The Monday Night Delight.”
The former World Wrestling Entertainment superstar has since left the squared-circle, and is coming to the area to promote his new fitness program, “Out of Your Mind Fitness,” created by him and a friend, personal trainer Jeff Carrier. Hennigan said the program is a “functional training regimen designed to get anyone into the best shape of their lives.”
Hennigan will be appearing at the Gold’s Gyms at Chambersburg, 133 W. Catherine St., at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. He will also appear at 6:30 p.m. at the Gold’s Gym in Carlisle, 1225 Ritner Highway, to conduct fitness seminars on his program.
“It’s kind of the next level beyond home fitness,” Hennigan said.
The program is meant to be done in the gym, and Hennigan said it can be used as the next step for those who do at-home workouts. Integrating strength across multiple muscle groups, balance and stability were some of the aspects Hennigan said the program targets. The end result, he said, is a functional body that aesthetically looks good.
Developing and promoting his fitness program is something that Hennigan has wanted to do for some time. At question-and-answer sessions, Hennigan said he is often asked about his own physical stature — most notably, his abs. He said that a lot of his own workouts are “outside the box,” and some are incorporated in “Out of Your Mind Fitness.”
Physical fitness has also been a passion of his for his entire life, and he said his program is a way to express that passion.
“I can kind of explain what functional training is, explain how I train and show somebody the training to show exactly how it’s done,” Hennigan said.
While the program is designed to be done at the gym, Hennigan reiterated that his program is no typical workout session. His program gives every set, rep and rest period for each workout, and workouts consist of exercises, such as scorpion pushups and one-arm pushups, and dynamic movements. Hennigan said as people progress in the program, the exercises increase in difficulty.
“It’s physically challenging and mentally challenging — mentally stimulating in a way that a lot of other programs aren’t,” he said.
In the squared-circle
Hennigan wrestled in WWE up until 2011. Although he is no longer with the company, professional wrestling is still deeply imbedded in him.
He got his break with the WWE by winning a contract from MTV’s “Tough Enough III” in 2002. He debuted as “Johnny Nitro” in 2005 and would eventually be known as “John Morrison.” His stint in the WWE included several championship reigns — he held the Extreme Championship Wrestling World Championship once, the Intercontinental Championship three times and the WWE Tag Team Championship four times. He was also a World Tag Team champion one time. He left the WWE in 2011.
Hennigan called wrestling “the point of life that everyone dreams about.” He said his favorite thing about the sport was being in the ring “from bell to bell.” The chants of the fans, the adrenaline and putting his heart into his performances were his passions of being in the ring. Some of his favorite matches include going against CM Punk, Sheamus and Dolph Ziggler, all of whom are former champions. One particular match he made note of was a triple-threat match with Carlito and Shelton Benjamin.
Since leaving the WWE, he has focused on promoting “Out of Your Mind” fitness, focused on acting and has spent time surfing. He said he has appeared in three movies and a few television shows, and hopes to use his acting experience when he returns to the ring. Hennigan said he has wrestled in the independent circuits but plans to return to a bigger stage at some point. | |
