TNA Impact on Thursday, July 25 scored a 1.05 rating, down from a 1.16 rating for the "Destination X" Impact last week.

Impact averaged 1.314 million viewers, down 12 percent from an average of 1.494 million viewers last week. Last week's show was the most-watched episode since January.

Putting the numbers in perspective, this week's Impact was the second-most-watched since returning to the 9:00 p.m. EST timeslot on May 30. But, last year's Impact this week on July 26, 2012 averaged 1.578 million viewers (a 16 percent drop-off this year).

- On cable TV Thursday night, Impact ranked #33 in overall viewers, #29 in males 18-34, and #20 in males 18-49. Impact was topped by its lead-in show, "Cops," which averaged 1.324 million viewers in its brief half-hour window.

In the key male demos, Impact dropped nearly two-tenths of a rating compared to last week's show, returning to levels in June when the show struggled following the timeslot change. It appears that this week's Impact was propped up by viewers outside of the key audience of males 18-49.

How is it that the second biggest wrestling organization can't even beat repeat episodes of Cops?

Actually, when COPS was on Fox, the Repeat of Cops usually beat an Original Episode of Cops that aired after. Cops repeats really well.

Still it's one thing to compete with a program on a basic cable channel, and another to get beat by something on syndication on your own channel. I mean if Cops was still as popular as it was 20 years ago, then FOX would still be airing it every weekend. Instead, Spike picked up the cancelled program and it's still finding a way to beat Impact, which has millions of dollars thrown into it and Hogan's name all over it.

In the grand scheme of things, this is looking pretty rough for TNA.

I don't think so, because Impact remains one of Spike TV's top 3 original Programming. Beaten by a cops repeat or not, when it comes to original programming Impact is still one of Spike TV's top shows. Which is why they used it as a launch pad for Bellator MMA.

Also Big Bang Theory beats every other show on all cable networks, everytime. TBS airs it every day and while Big Bang gets 1.3,1.2,1.1 their original shows that they invest money in, which airs after it gets a 0.8/0.7 (Cougat Town, SUllivan & Sons and Men At Work), because some shows repeat better.

Hell, repeats of Supernatural on TNT is beating most shows as well as Full House and Charmed still managing to garner 2/3 million viewers, more than Raw, Smackdown etc. Some shows just repeat really well, Cops is one of them.

Being one of the top original programs on Spike doesn't say much considering Spike doesn't really compete for it's own target demographic. Certainly 18-45 is a highly coveted demographic, but Spike doesn't even make it competitive. TBS and TNT on the other hand, are in the top 5 cable stations consistently from week to week. Obviously wrestling isn't as mainstream as they like to think, but it's not like TNA has been improving. While the number of possible viewers has grown, their numbers continue to remain the same or decline.

To be fair, if it was, it wouldnt HAVE to be a lead-in for the Bellator stuff. If anything, they would use Bellator to help lead into TNA, since TNA has been on that network for years now.

Combat sports typically do better when they begin later in the evening. The main events of boxing PPVs typically don't begin until 11:30 EST. The UFC always had their PPVs begin at 10 EST, but tried starting it an hour earlier with less than stellar results. They eventually moved it back to 10 EST.

Wrestling seems to be successful when at 8 or 9 EST, with the only major outlier being ECW, which aired from parking lots at 2AM on Tuesdays.

So yeah, even if it was WWE (and especially if it's TNA) you always have wrestling lead into MMA. In fact, RAW used to be a lead-in to the UFC's reality show, The Ultimate Fighter. TUF is what many consider the start of MMA's popularity explosion.

Actually it should be the Lead in if it's the highest rated show. Networks tend to count on their top shows as launching pad for new shows, USA uses their established shows, to lead into their new shows, The Voice is NBC's launching pad for new Shows (Smash, Revolution) Big Bang for CBS comedies, True Blood and Game Of Thrones as lead in for Girls, Veep and The Newsroom. They hope the majority of the viewers for their top shows to help the new shows behind them, Since TNA is there and gets an average of 1.3 million viewers, they hope at least 80% would stick around for Belator.

They have TNA, Bellator, and a bunch of programs that are either repeats or rip-offs of other shows.

They have Bar Rescue, Tattoo Rescue, Ink Master, Jail, Repo Games and a lot of other garbage. It's basically TruTv Two.

TNA Impact 7/25 Quarter-Hour Break Down

STRENGTHS: Mickie James vs. Gail Kim Knockouts Title match, finish of X Division Title match, Q1 from the "Cops" lead-in on Spike TV.

WEAKNESSES: A.J. Styles vs. Jeff Hardy main event, Sabin-Bully Ray legal angle, BFG Series matches, final 30 minutes of Impact.

- TNA Impact on Thursday, July 25 officially scored a 1.05 rating off a first hour 1.05 and second hour 1.05.

Both hours were buoyed by strong opening quarter-hours before the rest of the hour dropped off. In the first hour, Impact opened with a 1.11 in Q1 on the strength of the "Cops" lead-in. In the second hour, Impact opened with a show-high 1.17 rating in Q5 for the Knockouts Title match.

The rest of the second hour fell off to a 1.04, 0.96 for Jeff Hardy vs. A.J. Styles, and only a 1.01 for the show-closing TNA Title angle involving Chris Sabin, Bully Ray, Hulk Hogan, and Ray's lawyer that was played up throughout the show.

The picture is worse looking at the key male demographic. In m18-49, Impact's peak quarter-hour was Q1 following the "Cops" lead-in. Impact started with a 0.61 in Q1, rebounded to a 0.51 in Q5, dropped off to a show-low 0.42 in Q7, and increased to a 0.49 in Q8.

What helped Q8 was viewers tuning in at the very end of the show to catch the final two minutes of Impact. In m18-49, Impact drew 401,000 viewers at 10:58 and 418,000 viewers at 10:59 p.m., which were the two most-watched minutes of the second hour. But, the Knockouts Title match segment drew a more consistent audience than the final segment, which is why Q5's rating was higher than Q8's.

First Hour Break Down

- Q1: Impact opened with a 1.11 overall rating for Main Event Mafia congratulating Chris Sabin on becoming TNA World champion, Bully confronting Sabin to set up the legal angle to be played out throughout the show, and one commercial. (show-high 0.61 rating in m18-49)

At the point of the commercial at 9:10/9:11 p.m., 21 percent of the m18-49 audience left Impact for another show. The top recipients were TNT's weekly movie (34,000 viewers) and National Geographic Channel (32,000 viewers). About 16 percent of the audience was refilled (people tuning in, new viewers flipping over, or returning viewers) when Impact returned from break.

- Q2: Impact declined to a 1.03 overall rating for the first portion of the X Division Title match, one commercial, and build-up to the finish. (0.58 rating in m18-49)

- Q3: Impact increased to a 1.06 overall rating for the ending of the X Division Title match, one commercial, and Mr. Anderson vs. Hernandez. (0.60 rating in m18-49)

The segment was boosted by the ending to the X Division match, which went from 342,000 m18-49 viewers at 9:29 p.m. to 415,000 viewers at 9:30 p.m. to 454,000 viewers at 9:31 p.m. to 473,000 viewers at 9:32 p.m. for the ending of the match. This was the peak of the show in the m18-49 demo.

- Q4: Impact declined to a 1.01 overall rating for a segment that contained two full commercial breaks and backstage vignettes. (drop-off to a 0.50 rating in m18-49)

Second Hour Break Down

- Q5: Impact got its top-of-the-second-hour bump to a show-high 1.17 overall rating for the Knockouts Title match and one commercial. (only slight increase to a 0.51 rating in m18-49)

It appears Impact drew in a more general audience with the KO Title match, as there was not a significant bump in the m18-49 demographic in Q5. The top sources were 14,000 viewers from Fox at the top of the hour and 16,000 viewers from Adult Swim & Fox News at 10:06.

- Q6: Impact began its decline by dropping to a 1.04 overall rating for Samoa Joe vs. Christopher Daniels, one mid-match commercial, and the finish of the match. (drop-off to a 0.44 rating in m18-49)

- Q7: Impact dropped to a show-low 0.96 overall rating for A.J. Styles vs. Jeff Hardy, one commercial, and the end of the match spilling over into the first minute of Q8. (decline to a show-low 0.42 rating in m18-49)

- Q8: Impact rebounded slightly to a 1.01 overall rating for the show-closing angle involving new TNA champion Chris Sabin, Bully Ray, and Hulk Hogan making a decision about the TNA Title that followed the final commercial. (rebound to a 0.49 rating in m18-49)

The segment struggled coming out of the final commercial break before reaching 369,000 m18-49 viewers at 10:56 p.m., 378,000 viewers at 10:57 p.m., 401,000 viewers at 10:58 p.m., and 418,000 viewers at 10:59 to see what happened at the end of Impact.

- Top Outflows during Impact: Animal Planet drew the most m18-49 viewers away from Impact during the two-hour broadcast (133,000 viewers) followed by Disney XD, FX, Syfy, and Tru TV. Animal Planet was a factor mainly during the second hour, which is when TNA wrestler Eric Young's "Off the Hook" show airs.

Caldwell's Analysis: Surprising bomb for Jeff Hardy vs. A.J. Styles. Granted, it was slotted in the typically-weak Q7 portion of the show, but Hardy is a draw, so it either means TNA did not effectively promote the match, viewers are repelled by A.J. Styles's "brooding" character, or some other factors. Also, the show-closing angle did not provide the bump you would expect, drawing a lower rating than Samoa Joe vs. Daniels, which was not promoted in-advance.

Basically, the post-Destination X Impact was saved from dropping below a 1.0 rating by the Knockouts Title match, the Cops lead-in, and enough interest in the rest of the show to keep Impact above the water-mark.
