Not So Fast, Don Cheadle: Could Jason Bateman Pull Off A Golden Globes Upset? Jason-bateman-golden-globe-gold-derby-don-cheadle

At last year's Golden Globes, Don Cheadle ("House of Lies") shocked many awards pundits by claiming the trophy for Best TV Comedy Actor against tough competition. Could we be in for another huge jaw-dropper in this category next week in the form of Jason Bateman ("Arrested Development")?

At first glance, Bateman doesn't seem to have that much in his corner. But neither did Cheadle last year. In fact, many pundits thought Cheadle's surprise win was the result of Globes voters simply being enraptured by his movie star cred.

If silver screen stardom pushed Cheadle over the edge last year, which of this year's TV Comedy Actor nominees fits that same bill? Why, it's Bateman of course!

In the seven years between Fox's cancellation of "Arrested Development" in 2006 and Netflix's revival of the laffer in 2013, Bateman became a major Hollywood funnyman, with starring roles in films like "Horrible Bosses," "The Switch," "The Change-Up" and most recently "Identity Thief."

For many, "Arrested Development" aired so long ago that the show is out of sight, out of mind. That may be why we're seeing Bateman down in fifth place in Gold Derby's polling of Experts, Editors and Users, with lowly 50/1 odds.

But that's where the Cheadle factor comes into play. When Cheadle won his trophy last year, it had been about nine months since "House of Lies" had last aired the previous April, so a show's air date clearly isn't a factor with Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. voters.

The much-anticipated fourth season of cult comedy "Arrested Development" premiered to so-so reviews in mid-2013 and failed to secure any major Emmy nominations. But still, Emmy voters found room on their ballot for Bateman in the Comedy Actor category -- though he eventually lost out to Jim Parsons ("The Big Bang Theory").

Something else in Bateman's favor is the fact that this year's TV Comedy Actor race has no real frontrunner.

First place currently goes to HFPA favorite Michael J. Fox ("The Michael J. Fox Show") who already has four Golden Globes in this same category -- three for "Spin City" and one for "Family Ties." He's the odds-on favorite to claim another trophy next week according to our predictions with 8/13 odds, but since his show hasn't been very well-received, that could hurt Fox's chances.

In second place is Andy Samberg ("Brooklyn Nine-Nine"), the only first-time nominee in the category, while 2011 winner Parsons finds himself in third place in our predictions.

Last year's champ Cheadle only comes in fourth. Could it be that since Cheadle is already a proven winner in this category, he's essentially old news with the HFPA voters who are notorious for their love of honoring new shows and stars? And yes, even though Bateman won a Globe for "Arrested Development" back in 2004, the show's online streaming approach gives him that fresh, hip feel the voters crave.

Are we in for another shocker in the TV Comedy Actor category?
