Chihuahua saves Gloucester woman’s life

GLOUCESTER, Mass. -- A woman is lucky to be alive thanks to a persistent pooch.

That dog's animal instincts kicked in at the perfect time.

Cheeka the Chihuahua usually keeps her cool, but just after 10 p.m. Tuesday, she made a yelp for help.

Her owner, Yvonne Forgette, says the 3-year-old dog barked so much she woke up Forgette's boyfriend and led him downstairs.

"She wouldn't give up. She never does the stairs ever because she's little and the stairs are very steep, but she went down then kept on barking," Forgette said.

They found a white minivan flipped over in front of their Poplar Street home with 54-year-old Mary Orlando trapped inside.

Forgette's boyfriend called 911 and rescue crews rushed to cut Orlando out of the vehicle.

Thanks to Cheeka's bark, she is now recovering.

"We definitely adopted her for a reason, she's here for a reason. I always knew she was special, now the city knows she's special," Forgette said.

That driver was taken to the hospital but is in good condition. Police are investigating to determine if alcohol played a role in the crash.
