Newlywed Dies After Being Swept Over Ind. Waterfall

A Florida man was killed Sunday after going over a waterfall in Indiana.

Sheriff's deputies said 43-year-old Michael Kelley, of Daytona, had been hiking on a trail at Clifty Falls State Park, in Jefferson County.

News 5 has learned that Kelley had just gotten married Friday night and went hiking with his wife afterward.

The park ranger said Kelley climbed onto a tree about 6:30 p.m. near the top of Little Clifty Falls so that his wife, Belinda, could take his picture.

At some point Kelley apparently lost his footing and fell into the swift-moving water.

"He evidently slipped and fell, hit the creek and he was over the edge of the falls within seconds," said Cpl. Bill Beville, state park conservation officer. "She said he didn't even stop. He just shot over the falls, so there was nothing anybody could have done to save him."

Kelley then was swept over the falls and fell 70 feet into the canyon below, deputies said.

His body was located a short time later wrapped around a heavy branch about 100 yards downstream.

However, authorities were not able to reach his body for recovery until Monday morning, due to high water and treacherous terrain.
