Tom Cruise - or should I say, the guy or gal that's paid to tweet for young Mr Mapother? - tweeted today that a title for "Mission : Impossible 4" (You'll recall that, if only to signal that this is the first in an "all-new series" or somewhat of a reboot, if you will) may have been decided on.
Ready for it!?
"The Mission".
Yep. "The Mission". Hmmm, didn't we all go to see a flick by that name about twenty-five years ago? It was the Roland Joffe flick about the experiences of a Jesuit missionary in 18th century South America, no? De Niro and Jeremy Irons?
The puzzled looks on anyone under the age of 30 reading says it all : The title is ripe for reusing; nobody without a mortgage remembers the film that bore the same title.
The Brad Bird-directed "The Mission" will star Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames.
As previously reported, Paramount agreed to bankroll a third sequel in the Cruise-centric series so long as the big guy took a pay cut and agreed to share the screen with another actor, therefore making the film less of a 'Tom Cruise Vehicle' and more of a 'two-hander'.
Rumours of Cruise's Ethan Hunt splitting up an adventure with another IMF agent have been around for years (which goes to show you how long Cruise hasn't been the 'biggest star in the world' he was in the '80s and '90s) with Brad Pitt once rumoured to be joining the franchise.
Renner, nominated for an Oscar for his role in "Hurt Locker" and now in Ben Affleck's "The Town", will be that second hand.
Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec wrote the script. J.J Abrams produces.
