True Grit Tops Friday Box Office With $8.2 Million!

True Grit showed exactly that, as the Western throwback topped the box office on Friday with $8.2 million, according to early estimates.
After 10 days in theaters, the Coen brothers film, starring Jeff
Bridges, Matt Damon, and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld, spent its first day
at No. 1 by rising 72 percent from last Friday. (Every wide release
witnessed considerable jumps yesterday since last Friday was Christmas
Eve, a traditionally slow day at the box office). True Grit has so far grossed $70.5 million, and by the end of today, it should pass No Country for Old Men‘s $74.3 million tally to become the Coen brothers’ biggest hit. Right behind True Grit was the comedic threequel Little Fockers,
which rose 57 percent to laugh up $7.8 million and bring its cumulative
total to $84.7 million. Even though it placed second on Friday, Fockers
may wind up winning the weekend thanks to an increased presence from
family audiences on Saturday and Sunday. But it’s too close to call at
this point — both films are on track to make around $26 million.
In third place was Disney’s TRON: Legacy, which upgraded 27 percent to $5 million on Friday. Yogi Bear snatched fourth with $4.1 million — a bigger-than-the-average-bear jump of 93 percent. And The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
rounded out the top five by climbing 60 percent for $3.5 million. Check
