| Subject: Arena Chicks Volume 1 DVD Review Tue 19 Apr 2011, 8:35 am | |
| Arena Chicks is a new DVD series headed by 10+ year veteran Amber O’Neal, in association with CWF Mid-Atlantic. Unlike the most well-known companies producing Women’s Wrestling DVDs—Shimmer and Women Superstars Uncensored (WSU)—Arena Chicks Volume 1 was not a full-fledged Women’s Wrestling show. It was a compilation of matches that took place during numerous CWF Mid-Atlantic shows. Despite differences in format, that most fans may be use to, Arena Chicks is off to a great start…. The presentation/packaging was excellent, very good video quality and camera work, and most importantly, every single match on the DVD was solid…Matches on this DVD:Allison Danger vs. Mia Svenson (13:20) Sassy Stephie vs. Fantasia (10:20) Divina Fly vs. Kristin Flake (9:39) “Australian Football Rules” Mixed Tag Match: Amber O’Neal & Chiva Kid vs. Kellie Skater & Coach Gemini (11:00) Sara Del Rey vs. Allison Danger ( Angel Orsini vs. Jessica Havok (9:37) “The Dating Game Match” Sassy Stephie, Brittney Force, Cecil Scott & Michael McAllister vs. Angel Orsini, Divina Fly, Ben Tyler & Roo-D Lewis ( Here you can read Match to Match review: - Spoiler:
At the start of Arena Chicks Volume 1, a Mia Svensson versus Allison Danger graphic was shown—with part of their entrances shown in the background. The ladies were then seen in the ring. As the bell rang, commentators Amber Gertner and Amber O’Neal introduced Arena Chicks to viewers.
Match Number 1:
Allison Danger vs. Mia Svensson
—The action actually did not start until approximately 1 minute and 14 seconds after the bell. This was due to the ladies working the crowd. Allison worked as a heel, and Mia as a face. This began technical, and saw Danger dominate the majority of the match. Mia was able to mount numerous bursts of offense on Danger; however, after the 12 minute mark, Mia missed a top rope senton, in which Danger capitalized on with a pin. The match had to be restarted due to Mia having her shoulder up. Alison then got a cheap pin on Mia by having her feet on the bottom ropes.
Winner: Allison Danger at “13:20″
This was a solid match, with Allison playing a great cocky heel and “The Scandinavian Sweetheart” Mia Svensson playing her roll well as the underdog. Mia Svensson is best known for her work at Ring Wars Carolina (RWC). In August of 2010, she defeated Allison Danger, to become RWC FLOW (Fabulous Ladies of Wrestling) Champion.
Match Number 2:
Sassy Stephie vs. Fantasia
—The second match was Sassy Stephie versus Fantasia. Stephanie worked heel against the bigger-brooding Fantasia. Despite Fantasia’s size advantage, Sassy dominated the match. Fantasia was able to get a win by first countering Stephanie’s “Kiss My Sass” finisher, and then hitting a power bomb.
Winner: Fantasia at 10:20
Another solid match, with a booking not often seen… The smaller woman—Sassy Stephie, dominating the much bigger athlete throughout.
Match Number 3:
Divina Fly (Rosita) vs. Kristin Flake
—Kristin Flake (Lethalwow.com Interview) was heel in the match, against pre-TNA Rosita, under her Indy name “Divina Fly.” Kristin dominated the majority of the match, and hit a reverse DDT for the win.
Winner: Kristin Flake at 9:39
This match was the opposite of the last, with a booking fans are more use to… a smaller wrestler playing the underdog. At 4′11″, this is the way Divina will be booked for the majority of her career.
Match Number 4:
“Australian Football Rules” Mixed Tag Match:
Amber O’Neal & Chiva Kid vs. Kellie Skater & Coach Gemini
— Coach Gemini and Chiva Kid wrestled briefly before the ladies got in the match. There was a few tag exchanges between Kellie and Coach, with Kellie Skater getting quite a bit of offense on Chiva Kid. The finish of this match saw Amber O’Neal take Skater out with a DDT, followed by Chiva Kid pinning Coach Gemini after a brutal kick to the face.
Winner: Amber O’Neal & Chiva Kid at 11:00
This match was very entertaining, with Kellie Skater’s offense on Chiva Kid coming off very believable.
Match Number 5:
Sara Del Rey vs. Allison Danger
Winner: Sara Del Rey
Match Number 6:
Angel Orsini vs. Jessica Havok
—The finish saw Angel Orsini pick up the win after hitting the “Kiss of Death” (Flatliner). Great match!. Angel Orsini and Jessica are always amazing to see in the ring. These women do not look like models… They look like women that will kick your face in. It would have been great to see these girls push themselves to a close to 15minute match to define Volume One, as it was named the main event.
Winner: Angel Orsini at 9:37
Match Number 7:
“The Dating Game Match”
Sassy Stephie, Brittney Force, Cecil Scott & Michael McAllister vs. Angel Orsini, Divina Fly, Ben Tyler & Roo-D Lewis
—This was an 8-Person mixed tag team match.
Here you can read the final thoughts on the DVD as a whole: - Spoiler:
Final Thoughts:
Arena Chicks has potential to be an influential force in Women’s Wrestling. What stands out on Arena Chicks is the commentators acknowledging the accomplishments of each individual woman in numerous promotions. It has been a common practice for Wrestling companies not to acknowledge each other for numerous reasons. In this case, Alison Danger’s work in Shimmer for instance was acknowledged, as with Angel Orsini being WSU All Guts, No Glory champion at the time. There was numerous other instances, which was a breathe of fresh air on the DVD.
Because the DVD was a compilation, Volume One was not able to accomplish a definitive Main Event that stood out significantly above all the other matches. All the matches went 9 to 10 minutes, and were good by all means. However, it just made things even-keeled, despite the different dynamics of each. It did not help that there was a “The Dating Game Match” right after the match that was named the Main event of the DVD… “Angel Orsini vs. Jessica Havok.” Of course this will be fixed in time, once an Arena Chicks Champion is crowned.
Another aspect that can make this DVD series better is continuity with commentary. It was a compilation of matches after all; however, I felt that I was being introduced to volume one each time before a match. As a wrestling fan, ring entrances have always been a huge part of the experience, I will admit, that was missed. Even with the creative way of having the entrances in the background of the match graphics.
Overall, very nice start for Arena Chicks… buy the DVD by all means. For any collector, this is the first of what is sure to become a favorite among Women’s Wrestling fans. There was no bad matches on this DVD, these women put in the work. If you want to watch solid 10-minute matches with great athletes, this is for you. It will be interesting to see how Arena Chicks progresses in the future.
