This time last year, Jennifer Lawrence and Tom Hardy were relative unknowns. But, come Labor Day 2010, they had solidified themselves as stars thanks to the successes of Winter's Bone and Inception. Who has the potential to breakout this summer? Take a peek at the contenders ...

Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth is incredibly popular in his home country, but here, in the U.S., he's only recognizable to those who can recall his cameo as George Kirk in 2009's Star Trek. That, however, will no longer be the case when Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures unveil the first blockbuster of summer 2011, Thor, headlined by Chris as the hammer-wielding god of thunder.

Octavia Spencer (center) has been in the biz for over 15 years, but none of her previous roles have garnered her much attention. Well, that's all about to change when DreamWorks' The Help opens August 12. The film adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's 2009 novel of the same name (which co-stars Emma Stone and Viola Davis, pictured), finds Octavia portraying a sassy maid in 1960s Mississippi. And with the movie's scene-stealing role in her hands, the 38-year-old actress could easily find a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in her hands come the 84th Academy Awards next February.

X-Men made Hugh Jackman an overnight superstar in the summer of 2000. And, this summer, the franchise's fifth film, X-Men: First Class, will produce a new luminary named Michael Fassbender, who portrays Erik Lehnsherr (aka Magneto), the founder of the Brotherhood of Mutants.

2007's Transformers transformed Megan Fox's career (in a good way). 2009's squabble with Transformers' producer/director Michael Bay did not, and she was swiftly removed from Paramount Pictures' Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Enter her replacement, the equally-alluring Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who may end up making big bucks in a string of sequels ... should she learn to keep her mouth shut and slap on a grateful smile.

Jason Momoa is best-known for being former "Cosby" kid Lisa Bonet's significant other and for his roles on "Baywatch" and "Stargate Atlantis." However, by autumn, we expect the Hawaiian hunk to become a household name thanks to his starring role in Lionsgate Films' 3-D sword and sorcery flick Conan the Barbarian, which should easily surpass its $100 million budget in the first few weeks of release.

Jessica Chastain
should brace herself. In addition to appearing in this summer's The Help and "The Fields," she's also starring alongside Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt in Fox Searchlight Pictures' The Tree of Life, the highly anticipated new film from award-winning writer/director Terrence Malick. Long story short ... come September, she'll be in a whole new league, especially thanks to Malick's movie, which is already creating a ton of buzz, months before its debut at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.

Hopefully Summit Entertainment's A Better Life won't get lost in the shuffle this summer, when it's released alongside a ton of big budget projects. Why? Because the little drama -- about a Mexican gardener trying to keep his son from joining a L.A. gang -- features a big performance from its lead, Demian Bichir, who we'll consider a breakout star regardless of A Better Life's eventual box office tally.

Elle Fanning (center) had her breakout moment with the release of last years Sofia Coppola-directed Somewhere, but two of her Super 8 co-stars, Joel Courtney and Ryan Lee, have yet to see the spotlight. But, come June 10 -- when the J.J. Abrams-directed and Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi flick opens nationwide -- the youngsters stock will skyrocket thanks to their understated achievements in one of summer 2011's must-see movies.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So who do you think will have a breakout role this summer?

Do you like any of these choices?
