| WEST GOSHEN, Pa. - Film critic Roger Ebert has issued a lengthy partial apology to the families of Ryan Dunn of "Jackass" and Zach Hartwell, but he's not sorry for criticizing drinking and driving - or some of his actions on Twitter. More: Knoxville, MTV, Fan Tributes | Margera Parents Speak Slideshow: Recent Notable Deaths Dunn and Hartwell died early Monday in West Goshen, Pa., after Dunn, who appeared on the TV show "Jackass," lost control of his sports car. Police said speed may have contributed to the accident but investigators have not talked about alcohol as a cause of the crash. But Ebert tweeted on Monday that "friends don't let jackasses drink and drive." Now, Ebert wants to set the record straight. "I wasn't calling Ryan Dunn a jackass. In Twitter shorthand, I was referring to his association with "Jackass." Read All Of Ebert's Apology "I offer my sympathy to Ryan Dunn's family and friends, and to those of Zachary Hartwell, who also died in the crash. I mean that sincerely. It is tragic to lose a loved one," Ebert said. "I also regret that my tweet about the event was considered cruel. It was not intended as cruel. It was intended as true." "I have no way of knowing if Ryan Dunn was drunk at the time of his death," Ebert continues. But after the apology, Ebert defended the intent of his actions. "I don't know what happened in this case, and I was probably too quick to tweet. That was unseemly. I do know that nobody has any business driving on a public highway at 110 mph, as some estimated -- or fast enough, anyway, to leave a highway and fly through 40 yards of trees before crashing. That is especially true if the driver has had three shots and three beers. Two people were killed. What if the car had crashed into another car?" Ebert also complained again about Facebook taking down his fan page for an hour on Tuesday. Ebert’s Facebook page was offline for about one hour after the online backlash about Ebert’s Twitter message alleging Dunn was drinking and driving. Ebert claimed on his Twitter account that Facebook took down his fan page after “Jackass” fans put “malicious” comments on his wall. “Facebook! My page is harmless and an asset to you. Why did you remove it in response to anonymous jerks? Makes you look bad,” Ebert said. In about one hour, Ebert’s page reappeared, with a flood of comments on his wall from "Jackass" fans, with many comments theatening to harm Ebert. Bam Margera, Dunn’s best friend, was irate with Ebert on his own Twitter account. “I just lost my best friend, I have been crying hysterical for a full day and piece of ---- roger ebert has the gall to put in his 2 cents,” he said late Monday. (That message appeared to have removed on Tuesday.) Margera’s Facebook fan page had numerous insults about Ebert posted by users. Dunn was going more than 100 miles per hour in his Porsche with a friend as a passenger when he lost control of car. Both men died in the accident. Dunn, 34, appeared in all three of the "Jackass" movies, the latest being "Jackass 3D." He had a one-season run with a show of his own, called "Homewrecker," on which he helped practical jokes victims get revenge. | |

| I don't either.
It is pretty much the truth anyways.
Drunk drivers are fucking stupid and when they kill themselves and others it is sad but they made the decision to do it no one forced them too...

Silva, they dont know if he was drunk, so until thats confirmed its not fact. anyways, nothing wrong with being a prick ey...well lemme ask you both something, and see if I can get a non hypocritical answer. say your best friend was driving drunk and or speeding and they crashed and passed away. next day a random stranger that doesn't even know you or that person comes up to you and says they got what they deserved cause they were drunk and or speeding. how would you react? would you shrug it off cause it's the "truth" or punch that person in the face

| I would shrug it off because it is the true. I'm sorry, but I have no respect for drunk drivers, whether it is my best friend, partner, mother or father. If I found out my partner was drunk driving (not drink driving) I would leave them like that. I don't want to be affiliated with anyone who is selfishly risking the lives of others.
Where is the line? If they kill a little baby and a mother, should we just say 'aw its okay, his still my best friend i love her..' Why I won't have sympathy for this guy either. If he wants to do these stunts, I respect that, but when he dies from them we can't feel like it should've of happened. Sometimes accidents happen, but its all part of the risk.

| I'm not gonna punch that person because it is pretty much true. Driving drunk or simply speeding your ass off, it's dumb. Now, that isn't to say I wouldn't grieve the passing. It's just recognizing that he or she made a bad choice. | |

| I am entitled to my opinion and not be shot down by it, as much as you are entitled to yours. If we were all the same, and felt the same it would be boring. Don't appreciate being referred to as selfish either. The only selfish person in this scenario is the drunk driver, for endangering the lives of many others.
Of course I'm going to grieve for them, because they are out of this world. But I'm not going to blindly defend them for their fuck up. I'm sorry but theres absolutely no excuse for drunk driving. The way I view it, if you step foot behind a wheel when you are drunk, you should be classified as a murderer. And get charged for attempted murder.
I never said I don't feel for the family. I don't give a shit about the person who killed themselves, I do care about their family because they have to live with the loss that that person got them into. I then feel sympathy for the innocents who safely followed the speed limits and road rules who get fucked over because of some idiot on the road who only cares about themselves.
If I ever drunk drove and killed someone, I would never step foot in the drivers foot of a car ever again. I'd probably even be too traumatised to even wish to step foot in a car at all.
