Because it is an "official" commitment. I would like to be able to introduce my husband of ten years someday instead of my boyfriend of ten years. Plus there are tons of benefits that come with marriage that you can't get otherwise.

My mom and my dad have been together for over 25 years now. She refers to him as her husband, He refers to her as his wife.
People call her Mrs. Lucas, while she technically isn't. She doesn't care and when dealing with his clients, she is Mrs. Lucas.
My mom always said, the day things fuck up, she can take her shit and go, which is WAY better than having to pay lawyers, go through divorce heartache etc.
Same as my student loan, since i by law and in the system, I technically have no father, i get MORE student loan because my mom is a "single mom" and have to pay back less because of it.
Their are MANY advantages as well by NOT being married.
Marraige to me....will always be a piece of paper..and i'm glad my parents thought me that first hand.

But at least you have the right to choose to not get married. I, on the other hand, cannot get married to the man that I love. I do not have the choice.
