Well if anyone thought the game of hockey was on the decline, gamers seem to prove otherwise. Within the first week of release, EA Sports NHL 12 has had its biggest launch week in franchise history. It is estimated the game has generated $27 million at retail worldwide, an increase of 19 percent across Europe and North America.
In addition to this announcement, EA Sports is also planning to release a free-to-play social game on Facebook called NHL Superstars. While specific details aren’t available, it can be assumed that the game will essentially be the Hockey Ultimate Team mode from the retail game which involves collecting player cards and fielding the best team they can. Games will most likely play out in a simulation-style screen that will not involve direct input from the player.
“The fan response to NHL 12 has been incredible, and we’re delighted to expand the franchise to Facebook next month,” said Andrew Wilson, Executive Vice President, EA SPORTS. “NHL 12 is our most exciting hockey game ever, with more than 300 gameplay improvements and the ability to play with some of the NHL’s greatest legends.”
NHL Superstars will be available on Facebook in October.
