Welcome to Diva Dirt’s This Week in History, where each week we’ll take a look back at some of the most memorable moments in women’s wrestling from years gone by.
So, join us in taking a trip down memory lane…
September 27th, 1999 | When one thinks of inter-gender “Battle of the Sexes” tag team matches, their first thought may be of the one featuring Trish and Lita. However, that match had a predecessor, one where Chyna and Debra took on the ever-chivalrous Jeff Jarrett and Dr. Tom Pritchard. The women were victorious, but it was an odd sort of victory: Chyna chanced into a pin position after Pritchard hit her with a guitar shot and she fell onto a prone Jeff Jarrett.
September 30th, 2002 | The tone for Trish Stratus and Victoria‘s match was set before the bell even rang when Victoria attacked the Women’s Champion backstage, issuing a brutal beatdown. When the match finally began Trish fought viciously for revenge, but a steel chair shot from Victoria put a stop to both that and the match. Diva chair shots are a rare sight, and the attack did much to sell Victoria as a unhinged force to be reckoned with.
September 29th, 2007 | It raised one of the biggest question marks in Divas division history. Since this night four years ago, people have wondered “What if?” What if Krissy Vaine hadn’t quit WWE? Where would this storyline go? Alas, we’ll never find out. However, for one night in 2007, Krissy Vaine created an overnight buzz as she attacked the popular blonde Torrie Wilson and made one of the most impactful debuts of any Diva we’ve seen. Of course, had Krissy not quit WWE, perhaps Kristin Astara (and by proxy, the Diva Dirt audio show “Kristin & Friends”) wouldn’t have existed — and by her own admission, Kristin is a much nicer person than Krissy was!
October 1st, 2009 | From an impactful debut to a not-so impactful debut. Poor Lacey Von Erich. She wasn’t really cut out for life in the ring, was she? Despite being part of a wrestling dynasty, Lacey didn’t seem as comfortable in the ring as her fellow family members. In 2009, the gorgeous blonde joined TNA as the newest member of the Beautiful People, aiding Velvet Sky and Madison Rayne in getting one over on Sarita & Taylor Wilde, the then-Tag Team Champions. Lacey even busted out “The Claw”, a move made famous by her family. However, Lacey’s claw didn’t look quite as realistic as she attempted to squish Sarita’s brains.
September 27th, 2010 | Exactly one year ago this week, third generation star Natalya began traveling down a road that would lead to her first Divas Championship. Growing up in the famous Hart family, it was Natalya’s destiny to one day hold gold like her family members, including Hall of Famer Bret Hart. In 2010, Natalya’s life-long journey to win WWE gold finally culminated — and it all started with a victory in a Divas battle royal on Raw. After winning this match, Natalya went on to have three pay per view matches with Lay-Cool for the Divas Championship, finally taking home the belt in November.
