Welcome to Diva Dirt’s This Week in History, where each week we’ll take a look back at some of the most memorable moments in women’s wrestling from years gone by.
So, join us in taking a trip down memory lane…
November 19th, 2000 | At 2000′s Survivor Series, a relatively normal Women’s Title match between Lita and Ivory turned unforgettable when the heel of Ivory’s boot cut open Lita’s forehead. As the match progressed, her face became more and more obscured by her blood, and though Lita fought valiantly, Ivory managed to squeak out a victory and retain her title. In one of the most iconic images in Diva history, Lita received a standing ovation from the crowd as the referee helped her to the back.
November 18th, 2001 | A Six-Pack Challenge for the vacant Women’s Title at 2001′s Survivor Series brought out all the top contenders for the title: Ivory, Jacqueline, Jazz, Lita, Mighty Molly and Trish Stratus. The winner of the match and the Women’s Title turned out to be the match’s biggest underdog: Trish. With this, her first title win, Trish began a storied tenure as one of the division’s top competitors.
November 17th, 2003 | A pretty lousy night for Lita started on the Highlight Reel, which brought out Matt Hardy and set up a match pitting them against Molly Holly and Eric Bischoff. Lita thought Matt was going to pop the question but received quite the opposite: a cruel break-up, followed by a firing via Bischoff. Christian managed to get Lita’s job back and Chris Jericho used the emotional turn of events to convince Lita’s friend Trish Stratus of his good guy status. If you’re up on your Divas history, you know that Christian and Jericho had a plan up their sleeves..
November 14th, 2004 | Trish Stratus‘s feud with Lita centered on Trish taunting her foe’s recent setbacks: a tormenting pregnancy, a forced wedding, a miscarriage.. Lita clearly had had enough of Trish’s trash talking and used her Women’s Title shot at 2004′s Survivor Series to act on her frustations. Not caring that the title was on the line, Lita hit Trish with a steel chair and got herself DQed. Her attack didn’t end there, though, as she beat on Trish and choked her until the referees managed to tear her away, leaving Trish with a bloody nose.
November 14th, 2005 | The first Raw following the tragic death of Eddie Guerrero featured a Divas battle royal, in which Ashley Massaro, Candice Michelle, Christy Hemme, Jillian, Maria, Melina, Mickie James, Trish Stratus and Victoria all wore t-shirts in tribute to Mr. Latino Heat, showing some rare unity before commencing pummeling each other. Melina won the battle royal, eliminating Trish Stratus and instigating a short Women’s Title feud between them.
November 15th, 2009 | 2009′s Turning Point brought the feud between Tara and Awesome Kong to a head inside Six Sides of Steel. As hard-hitting as these two Knockouts’ styles are, it was no surprise that neither could hardly stand at the end of the match. Still, Tara opted against climbing out the cage to earn her victory, instead leaping off the top of it to hit Awesome Kong with a crossbody, pinning her and gaining the victory the hard way.
