| Subject: 'Twilight: Breaking Dawn' Wins Friday with $16.9 million; 'The Descendants' Huge in Limited Release Sun 27 Nov 2011, 12:03 am | |
| http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/11/26/box-office-update-twilight-breaking-dawn-muppets-descendants/The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 topped the box office on Black Friday with a whopping $16.9 million, which puts the vampire romance on track for a $40 million three-day weekend, and a $65 million five-day frame. After eight days, Breaking Dawn – Part 1 has grossed $196.2 million (it will pass $200 million tonight), and it’s holding a bit better in its second weekend than its predecessor, Eclipse, did in 2010.In second place on Friday was Disney’s The Muppets, which found $12.3 million and is looking at $31 million during the Friday-to-Sunday period. That would give the relaunched franchise a very successful $43.5 million five-day launch.Three more kids movies filled up the next three spots on the chart. Happy Feet Two slid into third place on Friday with $5.1 million. It may earn $13 million over three days. Arthur Christmas slightly edged Hugofor fourth place — the films earned $4.6 million and $4.5 million, respectively. They’re both looking at three-day weekends in the $11 million range. Unfortunately, they were both very expensive, but we’ll cover that more thoroughly tomorrow. In limited release, The Descendants found a jaw-dropping $2.7 million from 390 locations. The film, which grossed $2 million over Wednesday and Thursday, is looking at a $6.5 million three-day weekend, and a cume of over $10 million by Sunday. Looks like Alexander Payne’s well reviewed drama could be the rare Oscar-bait that connects with viewers as well.Meanwhile, My Week with Marilyn has done some fairly solid business of its own, but it looks like chump change when compared with The Descendants. In 244 theaters, the Michelle Williams vehicle earned about $300,000 on Wednesday and Thursday, and after a $607,000 Friday, the Marilyn Monroe biopic seems headed for a $1.8 million five-day frame. Finally, The Artist began its run yesterday in four theaters, and it scored a magnificent $75,000.1. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 – $16.9 million 2. The Muppets – $12.3 mil 3. Happy Feet – $5.1 mil 4. Arthur Christmas – $4.6 mil 5. Hugo – $4.5 mil 6. Jack and Jill – $3.8 mil 7. Immortals – $3.5 mil 8. Puss in Boots – $3 mil 9. The Descendants – $2.7 mil 10. J. Edgar – $2 mil ----------------------------- Anyone gone to the movies recently? | |
