Welcome to Diva Dirt’s This Week in History, where each week we’ll take a look back at some of the most memorable moments in women’s wrestling from years gone by.
So, join us in taking a trip down memory lane…
*November 28th, 2005 | Innocent interviewer Maria paid the price for angering GM Eric Bischoff and was booked to face Kurt Angle one-on-one. Kurt assured a terrified Maria that he wasn’t going to hurt her, and hugged her to prove it. However, the lingering hug quickly turned from creepy to dangerous when he wouldn’t let her go. Angle proceeded to hit her with an Angle Slam, winning the match, and was about to hook her into an ankle lock for good measure before John Cena came to her rescue, albiet a bit late. Hey, at least chivalry isn’t completely dead–it’s just a few minutes behind schedule.
*November 29th, 2004 | The first official time we saw Melina on a WWE program she was a shy girl who, thanks to GM-for-the-night Randy Orton, was hired and promptly placed in a lingerie contest with Candice Michelle, Christy Hemme, Maria and Stacy Keibler, which says a lot about how the Divas are perceived, when you think about it. Still, it’s interesting to see how quickly things change (and are forgotten), as this babyface persona lasted all of two appearances before she disappeared, only to re-debut as part of MNM. Maybe she saw what was in store for her (lingerie and limbo contests) and decided she needed some back-up in the form of Nitro and Mercury.
*December 1st, 2003 | For weeks, Trish Stratus and Lita were being wooed by Chris Jericho and Christian. While initially suspicious of their motives, both Divas eventually came to trust and (in Trish’s case) fall for their suitors. This all came crashing down when it was revealed that Jericho and Christian had a bet (for the steep sum of one Canadian dollar) to see who could sleep with their target first. Trish overheard the betters’ conversation and, needless to say, wasn’t keen on helping Jericho win the wager.
*December 2nd, 2007 | 2007′s Turning Point saw Awesome Kong and Gail Kim face off with Gail’s Knockouts Championship on the line, and the match was every bit as intense as expected. The Knockouts fought for over 10 minutes (which, in the televised women’s wrestling world, is an eternity) before Kong had enough of the referee’s admonitions and pie-faced him, earning herself a DQ. Gail wasn’t let off that easy, though, and Kong beat her senseless, even taking out Angelina Love and Velvet Sky when they tried to come to Gail’s aid. Though she was declared the match’s loser, Kong hardly looked like one.
*December 3rd, 2001 | A week after The Rock saved her from joining Vince McMahon’s infamous “Kiss My Ass” club, Trish Stratus expressed her gratitude with a peck on the cheek. The Rock seemed a little underwhelmed by this, and showed her his way of saying “you’re welcome”, giving her a much more impressive liplock. The pair teamed up later in the night, and The Rock proved to be the complete romance novel package, overcoming the odds to pick up the win for their team.-----------------------------Anyone like any of these things from this week in history? | |
