Welcome to Diva Dirt’s This Week in History, where each week we’ll take a look back at some of the most memorable moments in women’s wrestling from years gone by.
So, join us in taking a trip down memory lane…
(As usual, video in the above link.)
December 16th, 1999 | Tori was, apparently, not a fan of wrestling in Pudding matches, and didn’t appreciate that Stephanie McMahon had humiliated her by booking her in one on Raw. The next Smackdown she told her so, and found herself booked in another match: her vs. Stephanie. However, when she made her way to the ring for the match, she found herself victim of a bait and switch: her actual opponent was (future boyfriend) X-Pac. Tori was no match for him, and quickly lost the match. Score another point for daddy’s little girl!
December 14th, 2003 | The romance-turned feud between Lita, Trish Stratus Chris Jericho and Christian came to a head at 2003′s Armageddon when the Divas competed against the Superstars in an Intergender Tag Team match, dubbed the “Battle of the Sexes”. The Divas fought hard, while Y2J fought half-hearted, but the men were stil victorious, thanks to a roll-up by Christian that caught Trish unawares. Watching this match makes us wish to see another Battle of the Sexes today. Hm.. maybe the Divas of Doom could win where Trish and Lita couldn’t?
December 16th, 2005 | What a team player! Melina was so concerned about MNM’s odds in their Tag Team Title match against Rey Mysterio and Batista that she took it upon herself to.. ahem.. try to convince Batista to forfeit the match. Unfortunately for her, he did no such thing, and his team proceeded to win the belts that night.
December 17th, 2007 | These are a few of their favorite things: massive Tag Team matches and Divas in costume. Both of these were on display when Jillian, Layla, Melina and Victoria took on Kelly Kelly, Maria, Michelle McCool and Mickie James in a Santa’s Little Helpers match. Much like in every Christmas movie, the ending was a happy one, and the good girls won the match.
December 14th, 2009 & December 13th, 2010 | Two Divas of the Year, two different methods of earning their crown. In 2009, Maria became the 2nd ever Diva of the Year, being crowned via fan vote following a Divas Tag Team Evening Gown match. That result was quite controversial, due to her lack of relevance storyline-wise. But, as they (er, we) say, Diva of the Year today, gone tomorrow: Maria was released from the WWE just over two months later. The next year, Michelle McCool won the crown in a less interactive way when she won a Battle Royal. Hey, there’s no better way to measure a year’s achievements than showcasing your ability to remain within the ring longer than everyone else, right?
