| "The Tree of Life" received three awards, including best picture, from the San Francisco Film Critics Circle, which met Sunday at the Variety Club in San Francisco to honor the best films of 2011.
Tilda Swinton received the best actress honor as the tortured mother of a murderous teen in "We Need to Talk About Kevin." The best actor award went to Gary Oldman for his role in the Cold War espionage drama "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy." Supporting actor winners were Albert Brooks for his menacing mobster turn in "Drive," and Vanessa Redgrave for her powerful role in the Shakespeare drama "Coriolanus."
"The Tree of Life," an ambitious and dreamlike drama that centers on a family in the 1950s, also won awards for Terrence Malick's direction and Emmanuel Lubezki's cinematography.
"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" won for adapted screenplay, and the Wall Street investment bank deconstruction "Margin Call" won for original screenplay. "Rango" was named the top animated feature of the year, "Tabloid" won for best documentary, and "Certified Copy" was the best foreign language film.
The Marlon Riggs award, which honors a contributor to the Bay Area film community, was awarded to the San Francisco-based National Film Preservation Society. "The Mill and the Cross" won a special citation for underappreciated films.
The group is composed of 31 local newspaper critics, online critics, editors and broadcasters. Critics Mick LaSalle, Peter Hartlaub, and Arts and Entertainment Editor Leba Hertz represented The Chronicle, along with contributors Ruthe Stein and Pam Grady.

| I saw it this past summer and hated it for the most part.
The acting parts were good but it had way too much time spent on just images and a voice the audience could barely hear..
But congrats to it..
I like their choice for Best Actress and the other choices are nice to see some new winners get some much needed momentum before the bigger awards [SAG/Golden Globes/Oscars]. | |
