| http://www.goldderby.com/films/news/2282/'the-help'-leads-with-four-sag-awards-nominations.html#The Help Leads With Four SAG Nominations!"The Help" leads with four nominations for the 18th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards announced Wednesday and "The Artist" has three nods. "Bridesmaids" made a strong showing with two bids including a nod for Best Ensemble while Oscar frontrunner "Hugo" was shut out. The Screen Actors Guild Awards have an impressive track record of foreseeing the Academy Awards. Of last year's 20 SAG acting nominees, 17 contended at the Oscars. All four of the SAG film acting winners went on to prevail at the Academy Awards. And SAG ensemble champ "The King's Speech" was also named Best Picture at the Oscars. In the 16-year history of the Ensemble award, only the first roster of nominees did not include the eventual Oscar champ ("Braveheart"). And all the winners at SAG have gone on to reap Academy Award bids for Best Picture save one ("The Birdcage," 1996). This year's nominees are: "The Artist," "Bridesmaids," "The Descendants," "The Help" and "Midnight in Paris." Seven SAG champs -- "Shakespeare in Love," "American Beauty," "Chicago," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," "Crash," "No Country for Old Men," "Slumdog Millionaire" and "The King's Speech" -- also won the top Oscar.Thirteen of the 17 SAG Best Actor champs went on to win at the Oscars, including the last seven in a row. This year's nominees are: Demian Bechir ("A Better Life"), George Clooney ("The Descendants"), Leonardo DiCaprio ("J. Edgar"), Jean Dujardin ("The Artist") and Brad Pitt ("Moneyball"). None of them have won individual SAG Awards. Clooney has lost all five of his movie bids but shared in four TV Ensemble Awards for "ER" (1995 - 1998) while Pitt shared in the ensemble win by "Inglorious Basterds" two years ago. DiCaprio has lost all seven of his previous races. Twelve of the SAG winners for Best Actress repeated at the Academy Awards. This year's nominees are: Glenn Close ("Albert Nobbs"), Viola Davis ("The Help"), Meryl Streep ("The Iron Lady"), Tilda Swinton ("We Need to Talk About Kevin") and Michelle Williams ("My Week with Marilyn"). Close has won for the TV work on "Damages" and contends again this year for that role. Streep won this award for "Doubt" as well as one for her work on the TV miniseries "Angels in America" while Davis was a two-time contender for "Doubt." Swinton and Williams both lost their previous three bids. Ten of the SAG Supporting Actors repeated at the Oscars, including the last four in a row. This year's nominees are: Kenneth Branagh ("My Week With Marilyn"), Armie Hammer ("J. Edgar"), Jonah Hill ("Moneyball"), Nick Nolte ("Warrior) and Christopher Plummer ("Beginners")Ten of the SAG Supporting Actress winners claimed the same award at the Oscars while Kate Winslet ("The Reader") got a bump up to Best Actress at the Academy Awards. This year's nominees are: Berenice Bojo ("The Artist"), Jessica Chastain ("The Help"), Melissa McCarthy ("Bridesmaids"), Janet McTeer ("Albert Nobbs") and Octavia Spencer ("The Help"). The 18th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be presented on Jan. 29, 2012 from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and air live on TBS and TNT. | |
