"The Artist" solidified its status as the Oscar frontrunner with a leading three wins at the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards Thursday. The Valentine to the silent film era won Best Comedy/Musical Picture, Best Comedy/Musical Actor (Jean Dujardin) and Best Score (Ludovic Bource) (See full list of winners here).

However, it faces a strong challenge from "The Descendants" which won Best Drama Picture and Best Drama Actor (George Clooney). Clooney's other contender -- his political drama "The Ides of March" -- was shut out despite four nominations.

While Meryl Streep extended her Globe record to seven awards with a victory for "The Iron Lady," this was her first win in the Drama Actress race since "Sophie's Choice" in 1982. That film marked the second of her two Oscar wins; she has lost a dozen bids since then.

"Hugo" won only one of its three bids but it was a big one -- Best Director. 2010 Cecil B. DeMille honoree Martin Scorsese now has a bookend to his 2006 trophy for "The Departed."

Octavia Spencer, who inspired her character in "The Help," was almost overcome as she accepted the Supporting Actress prize. She has dominated the precursor prizes and is far ahead to repeat at the Oscars.

Veteran actor Christopher Plummer won his first Golden Globe for his supporting turn in "Beginners" and delivered an eloquent speech as befits a two-time Tony winner.

Third time proved the charm for Michelle Williams ("My Week with Marilyn") who claimed Comedy/Musical Actress. In her charming acceptance speech, she mentioned that Marilyn Monroe won this same prize in 1959 for "Some Like It Hot."

Unlike the Oscars, there is only one Screenplay award. Woody Allen won for his original script for "Midnight in Paris." He had won only one of his 11 previous Globe bids when he claimed this same award in 1985 for "The Purple Rose of Cairo." Among those he defeated this year, the two adapted frontrunners "The Descendants" and "Moneyball."

"A Separation" added another Foreign Langugage Film prize as it hopes to make the cut with the Academy.

Steven Spielberg saw "War Horse" shut out but won Best Animated Feature for "The Adventures of Tintin," edging out frontrunner "Rango." And Madonna may not have met with critical approval for helming "W.E.," but the HFPA liked the sound of "Masterpiece," the tune she co-wrote with Julie Frost and Jimmy Harry which won Best Song.

The HFPA has about 85 members drawn from media who cover Hollywood for international outlets. Five-time Globe nominees Morgan Freeman received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. He won the Best Comedy/Music Actor award for "Driving Miss Daisy" in 1989. Ricky Gervais returned to host the live NBC kudocast on Jan. 16.

The HFPA continued its love affair with new TV shows. "Homeland" won Best Drama Series for its first season on Showtime. It beat last year's champ "Boardwalk Empire" and three other rookie shows -- "American Horror Story," "Boss" and "Game of Thrones."

"Homeland" star Claire Danes won Best Drama Actress, getting a bookend to her 1994 win for "My So-Called Life." She is three-for-three with the Globes, having prevailed last year for her starring role in the telefilm "Temple Grandin."

Kelsey Grammer won his first Drama Actor prize for the freshman Starz series "Boss" to join the pair of Comedy Actor trophies he claimed for "Cheers." Among those he defeated was last year's winner Steve Buscemi ("Boardwalk Empire") as well as Bryan Cranston who may have three Emmys but is still without a Globe for "Breaking Bad."

Matt LeBlanc won Best Comedy Actor for the first season of "Episodes." Playing an exaggerated version of himself proved more winning than his role of Joey Tribiani on "Friends" and "Joey" where he lost this category three times.

After winning twice for supporting turns in telefilms, Laura Dern won Best Comedy Actress for her first TV series, the new HBO laffer "Enlightened." Among those she defeated was another rookie series star Zooey Deschanel ("New Girl") as well as last year's winner Laura Linney ("The Big C") and two-time champ Tina Fey ("30 Rock," 2007; 2008). The HFPA really didn't take to Emmy champ Melissa McCarthy ("Mike & Molly") who was also snubbed on the film side for "Bridesmaids."

Reigning two-time Emmy champ "Modern Family" won Comedy Series at the Globes for the first time, finally beating "Glee" after two losses.

"Downton Abbey" repeated its Emmy win, prevailing in the Movie/Miniseries race edging out, among others, "Mildred Pierce" which saw its star Kate Winslet prevail for Movie/Mini Actress just as she had at the Emmys. Idris Elba won Movie/Mini Actor for "Luther."

Jessica Lange won her fifth Golden Globe nomination for her turn on the new series "American Horror Story." She won prizes for both her Oscar-winning roles in "Tootsie" and "Blue Sky" as well as the TV version of "A Streetcar Named Desire." Her fifth trophy was for her debut in "King Kong."

And Peter Dinklage now has a Golden Globe to join the Emmy he won last September for his supporting performance in "Game of Thrones."

I as well was happy Lang won the Globe for American Horror Story.

I enjoyed the first season a lot.

The tv actor/actress winners were not any I really cared for mainly because I don't watch the shows that they won for. I want to check out Homeland for sure and same with Game of Thrones I just have yet to.

The 4 people to win the lead actor/actress in a drama or comedy/musical and the 2 who won for Supporting roles were all predictable as well.

I think this basically seals the deal that Clooney, Plummer, and Spencer will win the Oscar next month.

Meryl Streep and Viola Davis are still in a tight race imo for lead actress at the Oscars. Only really Michelle Williams could make it a three way race but even then her chance of winning seems to be small.

The director race this year is pretty stacked. I guess it is between The Artist's director and Scorsese.

I saw and liked The Artist so it winning for Best Picture Musical or Comedy was nice although very easy to predict. Same goes for The Descendants which makes it a 2 horse race [sorry Warhorse you are not one of them.. Embarassed ] to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards between The Artist and The Descendants.

We'll see who [if any] pulls ahead before the Oscars considering there are still SAGS, BAFTAs, the first ever Australian Academy Awards and many other smaller ceremonies!
