For the first time, one "American Idol" replaces another at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart as Adam Lambert's "Trespassing" debuts atop the list with 77,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. His arrival bumps last week's leader, Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away," down to No. 3 (54,000; down 55%).
It's Lambert's first No. 1 album and is his second major label studio set. It follows 2009's "For Your Entertainment," which debuted and peaked at No. 3 with 198,000 sold in its first week. It was blocked from No. 1 by Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed a Dream" (a debut at No. 1 with 701,000) and Andrea Bocelli's "My Christmas" at No. 2 (218,000).
"Trespassing's" 77,000 start is the smallest sum at No. 1 on the chart since the tally dated Aug. 20, 2011, when Adele's "21" sold 76,000 in its 12th nonconsecutive week atop the list. "Trespassing" has the smallest sales week for a No. 1 debut since Amos Lee's "Mission Bell" started in the penthouse with 40,000 on the Feb. 12, 2011 chart.
Lambert is the seventh "American Idol" finalist to reach No. 1, following Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken, Underwood, Chris Daughtry (of Daughtry) and Scotty McCreery.
Further, as an "Idol" finalist rules the chart for the third straight week, it's the longest that "Idol" has monopolized the No. 1 slot. We've had two-week runs atop the list, but always from a singular album -- like Underwood the past two weeks with "Blown Away."
Right behind Lambert on the Billboard 200 this week is Adele's "21," which holds at No. 2 with 63,000 (down 38%).
Comedy rock duo Tenacious D (comprised of actors Jack Black and Kyle Glass) debuts at No. 4 with "Rize of the Fenix," selling 49,000. It's the act's highest charting album yet after hitting No. 8 in 2006 with "The Pick of Destiny" soundtrack at No. 33 in 2001 with its self-titled debut.
Norah Jones' "Little Broken Hearts" holds at No. 5 with 45,000 (down 24%). The "Now 42" album is down two slots to No. 6 with 42,000 (down 36%) while Beach House's "Bloom" starts at No. 7 with a career-high sales week of 41,000. It's also a new chart high for the act, which had never visited the top 40 with two earlier entries.
At No. 8, the "Glee, the Music: Season Three - The Graduation Album" bows with 39,000. It's the 14th top 10 for the Fox TV ensemble, but it's the lowest sales debut (39,000) for a full-length "Glee" album (not including its live movie soundtrack).
Rounding out the top 10 are Lionel Richie's "Tuskegee" (3-9 with 39,000; down 45%) and One Direction's "Up All Night" (7-10 with 34,000; down 15%).
Over on the Digital Songs chart, we have a new No. 1. Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" jumps two spots to No. 1, selling 293,000 downloads (up 25%). Jepsen performed the track on Sunday night's (May 20) 2012 Billboard Music Awards, which may have aided the song's sales bump. It also rises 9-7 on the Pop Songs airplay chart.
Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" (featuring Kimbra) slips 1-2 with 289,000 (down 10%) and Maroon 5's "Payphone" (featuring Wiz Khalifa) falls 2-3 with 282,000 (down 4%). Nicki Minaj's "Starships" flies 6-4 (174,000; up 15%) and fun.'s "We Are Young" (featuring Janelle Monae) holds at No. 5 (162,000; down 2%).
Flo Rida's "Wild Ones" (featuring Sia) is up one slot to No. 6 (152,000; up 1%) and Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" is down 4-7 (144,000; down 13%). One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful" is stationary at No. 8 (141,000; down 4%), Train's "Drive By" motors up 12-9 (109,000; up 19%) and Jennifer Lopez's "Dance Again" (featuring Pitbull) is down 9-10 (107,000; up 3%).
Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending May 20) totaled 5.09 million units, down 9% compared to the sum last week (5.58 million) and down 6% compared to the comparable sales week of 2011 (5.41 million). Year to date album sales stand at 117.40 million, down 2% compared to the same total at this point last year (119.19 million).
Digital track sales this past week totaled 24.95 million downloads, down less than 1% compared to last week (24.96 million) and down 2% stacked next to the comparable week of 2011 (24.28 million). Year to date track sales are at 545.30 million, up 6% compared to the same total at this point last year (511.44 million).
Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2011 when: Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" crashed in at No. 1 with 1.1 million copies sold in its first week.
(Note: This story was updated at 12:39 PM PST on May 23 to correct a revised position and sales number for Tenacious D's album.)

| Yeah congrats to him although his album had a very low # 1 tally it is still # 1.
It's amazing to me that after nearly a year and a half Adele's CD 21 is still in the top 5, let alone # 2 this week!
