'The Amazing Spider-Man' Earns a Record-Breaking $35 Million on Tuesday!

Sony’s reboot The Amazing Spider-Man earned $7.5 million from midnight shows during its U.S. premiere last night — $1.2 million of which came from 300 IMAX screens.

The $220 million web-slinging flick, which Sony expects will earn between $110 and $120 million over its first six days, has already taken in $50.2 million overseas, and it seems to be off to a healthy start domestically. “We had a fantastic start,” says a rep for the studio.

Comparisons are somewhat difficult given The Amazing Spider-Man‘s unconventional Tuesday release — Spider-Man 3 earned $7.5 million during its Friday midnight debut on the way to a $151 million opening weekend, although that film was not presented in price-jacking 3-D/IMAX, and midnight screenings were less popular five years ago than they are today. Another film from five years ago that opened on a Tuesday, Transformers, earned $8.8 million on Monday night sneaks and took in $155.4 million through Sunday night.

Based on these results (and a whole lot of speculation), I’d bet that The Amazing Spider-Man will take in about $125 million in its first six days, but honestly, it’s too soon to tell right now.

Anyone going to watch this?

Even if I had the money, I wouldn't go see this. I may watch it online or something, but I just don't like seeing the change of main characters like this. There are rare times when I feel it's okay, it's something that'll have to grow on me.

I like Garfield so I'll see it.

I don't know if I'll see it this weekend but for sure within 2 weeks after release.

Looks like Sony has another hit on their hands!

The studio’s reboot The Amazing Spider-Man grossed $35 million on its opening day in theaters ($7.5 million of that came from midnight showings, and $4 million from 307 IMAX screens), thereby beating the 2-D, IMAX-less Transformers, which earned $27.9 million on its opening day on July 3, 2007, and setting a new Tuesday box office record.

“We are off to an outstanding start here in North America with big fireworks still to come!” says an excited rep for the studio. The July 4th frame is always a lucrative one in theaters.

The $220 million action movie now seems headed for a six-day total above $150 million (Transformers earned $155.4 million in its first six days) — high above Sony’s internal expectations, which had The Amazing Spider-Man earning between $110 and $120 million during the Tuesday-to-Sunday period. Of course, there’s always the chance the picture could crumble from here, but that seems unlikely. Spidey offers an upbeat, popcorn-munching adventure on the weekend when people are most likely to see effects-heavy blockbusters, and audiences are enjoying the film — it earned an “A-” CinemaScore grade.

I think rebooting this 10 years after the first one is so stupid. Especially considering they spawned THREE successful movies. I mean, HOW ABOUT WAITING DECADES before rebooting shit?

Yeah it was really soon to reboot it although I did like the new film.

Emma was great in it but Garfield was the highlight for me.

Glad he got the role.

Idk; I have not seen the original Spider Man since it came out so I can't really judge it that much.

The graphics will for sure be better [duh] and I personally like Garfield more than McGuire but the original was not bad by any means so maybe they were about equal. :-/

I'd see it if I were you for sure.
