WWE will launch on August 25 a new Saturday morning wrestling show aimed at children, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The show, titled "WWE Saturday Morning Slam," also marks WWE's return to network television. CW will air the show at 10:00 a.m. as part of a new Saturday morning block of television called Vortexx.
The half-hour WWE show will include one match per week and various behind-the-scenes features on WWE talent. WWE will also incorporate anti-bullying content from their B.A. S.T.A.R. initiative.
WWE was approached by Saban Brands, which is launching the Vortexx block of TV, to provide content aimed at younger viewers. According to the Times, WWE's research shows that 22 percent of WWE's audience is made up of boys younger than 12-years-old. WWE also cited a statistic that 40 percent of people who attend live events bring their kids.
As for the content of the programming aimed at children in an early morning timeslot, WWE executive Eric Pankowski said they will be careful about what makes the show.
"We are very sensitive to the fact that we are speaking to an audience of children," Pankowski said. "We want to make sure that the content that we put on at 10 o'clock on Saturday morning is appropriate for younger audiences."

Caldwell's Analysis: This makes sense with a growing population of kids watching the program and fits former WWE CEO Linda McMahon's comment several years ago about WWE having a "cradle to the grave" marketing strategy. On the business side, it presumably adds another slice of revenue to the TV Rights Fee column in WWE's financial reporting.

- On August 25, WWE returns to a kids' television time slot with WWE Saturday Morning Slam as part of a five-hour television block on The CW. According to F4WOnline.com, kid-friendly Superstar Hornswoggle is under consideration to host the show. WWE officials have long-term plans for the show as they want it to be a success rather than another program with minimal effort put in that ultimately falls by the wayside. | |
