'Argo,' 'Les Miz,' 'Lincoln' Among AFI Top 10 American Movies [Top 10 TV Shows Listed As Well]

The American Film Institute's list of the Top 10 Films of 2012 includes a slew of likely Oscar contenders for Best Picture but not "The Master."

But this snub doesn't rule the Paul Thomas Anderson picture, which just won four awards from the LA film critics, out of Oscar contention.

Remember, last year, the AFI missed eventual Oscar nominee "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close." And, in 2006, the AFI failed to include the eventual Oscar Best Picture champ "The Departed" among its top 10.

Of this year's top Oscar contenders, only "Amour," which just won the top prize from the LA critics, was not eligible for AFI consideration as it was foreign-made. The same fate befell last year's Best Picture winner "The Artist."

Two years ago, the AFI named nine of the eventual 10 Best Picture nominees, with only the champ -- British-made "The King's Speech" -- missing from the list. It too received a special prize. Three years ago, the AFI snubbed eventual Best Picture nominees "Avatar" and "Inglourious Basterds."

These films, along with the winners of the TV awards, will be feted during a Jan. 11 luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Reigning Emmy champs "Modern Family" and "Homeland" were among the top 10 TV achievements of the year as named by the American Film Institute Monday.

This marks the fourth consecutive appearance on the list for "Modern Family." The only other laffers making the cut with the jury were freshman series "Girls" and "Louie," which was also cited last year.

Returning to the list for a record fifth time is "Mad Men," which had been ineligible last year as it did not air any new episodes in 2011. Also earning repeat recognition were "Breaking Bad" and "Game of Thrones."

New to the list are "The Walking Dead" and "American Horror Story: Asylum" while one-off telefilm "Game Change" was also cited.

These TV shows, along with the winners of the movie awards, will be feted during a Jan. 13 luncheon at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.

I think the top 10 list is good and I like a lot of the shows that made it on their list.
