The Producers Guild of America has announced its nominations for best productions of the year, in what is often looked to as an indicator for how the Academy Awards may go.
The guild selected 10 films — most of them common guesses for the group that could make up the Oscar list of the best films of 2012: Argo, Lincoln, Les Misérables, and Zero Dark Thirty among others.
The one surprise: Skyfall. No 007 film has ever cracked the Best Picture list, but if this nomination is any indication, that could change when the Oscar nods are revealed Jan. 10.
Last year, three out of the guild’s 10 didn’t match up with the Academy’s best picture selections. The Producers Guild skewed a little more populist, throwing nominations to Bridesmaids, The Ides of March, and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, while the Academy went with The Tree of Life, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and no tenth nominee.
The year before, the guild’s nominations were much closer to the mark, selecting The Town over the Academy’s choice of Winter’s Bone.
The Producers Guild Awards ceremony, which will be produced by Michael De Luca, will take place on Jan. 26.

The Producers Guild of America unveiled its 10 nominees for Best Picture on Wednesday (a day ahead of schedule). Eight of the top contenders at the Oscars made the cut with these kudos, including frontrunner "Lincoln" as well as "Zero Dark Thirty," "Argo," "Les Miserables," "Silver Linings Playbook," "Life of Pi," "Django Unchained" and "Beasts of the Southern Wild."
Rounding out the roster for the 24th annual edition of these awards are "Moonrise Kingdom" (#11 on our odds chart) and "Skyfall" (#13) and which get big boosts to their profiles with 48 hours still left to vote for Oscar nominations. The PGA was to reveal their nominees on Thursday, the day Oscar balloting was originally scheduled to end.
Among those films snubbed by the PGA were critical darlings "The Master" (this Critics' Choice nominee is #9 on our chart) and "Amour" (#10) as well as popular fare "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" (which contends at both SAG and Globes and is our # 12) and "Flight" (#14).
The guild and Oscars have agreed on 15 of the most recent 22 Best Picture champs, including the last five in a row. Key to the import of this precursor prize is that it picks a winner using the same kind of counting as the Oscars -- the preferential ballot.
Last year, the PGA predicted seven of the eventual nine Best Picture contenders, including "The Artist" which won with both groups. The other PGA nominees that repeated at the Oscars were: "The Descendants," "The Help" "Hugo," "Midnight in Paris," "Moneyball" and "War Horse." The PGA filled out their slate with popular pictures "Bridesmaids," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and "The Ides of March" while the Oscars went with "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" and "The Tree of Life."
Two years ago, the PGA foresaw nine of the eventual 10 Best Picture Oscar nominees. The guild went for "The Town" while the academy opted for "Winter's Bone" for the tenth slot. Both groups chose "The King's Speech" as the Best Picture of the year.
In 2009, the Oscars concurred with the PGA on eight of the 10 contenders. PGA nominated "Invictus" and "Star Trek" over Oscar choices "The Blind Side" and "A Serious Man." Both groups picked as best pic "The Hurt Locker."
The PGA also revealed the five nominees for Best Animated Feature: "Brave," "Wreck-It Ralph," "Frankenweenie," "ParaNorman" and "Rise of the Guardians." These five films top our list of potential Oscar nominees.
Last year, the PGA previewed three of the five Oscar nominees, citing eventual Oscar winner "Rango" as well as "Kung Fu Panda 2" and "Puss in Boots." However, the PGA champ was "The Adventures of Tintin," which was snubbed by the academy as was the critically derided PGA nominee "Cars 2" in favor of "A Cat in Paris" and "Chico and Rita."
While most of the TV nominees were announced on Nov. 28, the PGA unveiled the contenders for TV Movie/Miniseries on Wednesday: "American Horror Story," "The Dust Bowl," "Game Change," "Hatfields and McCoys" and "Sherlock."
Winners will be revealed during a Jan. 26 ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. | |
