At the recent MTV VMAs, M.I.A.'s "Bad Girls" lost Video of the Year to Rihanna's "We Found Love," so that may suggest Rihanna has the edge as they clash at the Grammys.
However, these two prizes rarely overlap. Since 1984, the VMAs and Grammys have agreed on best video only four times:
1991 - R.E.M. - "Losing My Religion"
1998 - Madonna - "Ray Of Light"
2002 - Eminem - "Without Me"
2010 - Lady Gaga - "Bad Romance"
On three other occasions, a MTV VMA Video of the Year winner was nominated for the equivalent prize at the Grammys, but lost:
1990 - Sinead O'Connor - "Nothing Compares 2 U"
1996 - The Smashing Pumpkins - "Tonight, Tonight"
2004 - Outkast - "Hey Ya"
And on seven other occasions, a video lost at the VMAs but wreaked revenge by prevailing at the Grammys:
1989 - Michael Jackson - "Leave Me Alone"
1992 - Peter Gabriel - "Digging In The Dirt"
1995 - Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson - "Scream"
1999 - Korn - "Freak On A Leash"
2001 - Fatboy Slim - "Weapon Of Choice"
2003 - Johnny Cash - "Hurt"
Among other competitors in this Grammy race: Jay-Z & Kanye West featuring Frank Ocean and the Dream's "No Church in the Wild," which is likely to win Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. However, it had only had minor rotation on MTV, VH1, BET, due to violent imagery and this might scare voters away.
Neither of the other nominees -- Foster The People's "Houdini" and Woodkid's "Run Boy Run" -- is expected to win.
