There's a chance that Daniel Craig may not be back for The Girl Who Played with Fire, Sony's long-planned sequel to David Fincher's retelling of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
Fincher is still in early talks to reprise directing duties on the film and Rooney Mara is set to return as series protagonist Lisbeth Salander. While Dragon Tattoo did modestly well, Sony wants the sequel done for less than what its predecessor cost.
According to The Hollywood Reporter's sources, "the biggest holdup isn't Fincher's involvement but star Daniel Craig's. The studio has options on Craig for two sequels, but the actor is said to want a pay raise, not a cut, in the wake of Skyfall grossing $1 billion worldwide. If Sony can't bring Craig back to reprise his role as journalist Mikael Blomkvist, the sources say the studio could write the character out of the sequel. (A Craig source says negotiations have yet to commence but the actor wants to return to the role.)"
Seeing as how the second book in Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy focuses primarily on Lisbeth anyway, it wouldn't be impossible to write out Craig's character, journalist Mikael Blomkvist. The studio's said to be reluctant to commission a rewrite of Steven Zaillian's screenplay adaptation as they deem his existing script "production-ready." The script also "cost the studio mid-seven figures, one of the most expensive adaptations to date."
In addition, Zaillian may be unavailable to pen a Craig-less rewrite of the screenplay as he's already committed to his new HBO series Criminal Justice, starring James Gandolfini.
The good news for fans is that Sony reportedly remains committed to still making The Girl Who Played with Fire. | |
