Anna Karenina won for the most highly contested category of best production design in a period film. It competed against Argo, Django Unchained, Les Miserables and Lincoln. Upon accepting the honor, Sarah Greenwood thanked director Joe Wright for his “mad visions he keeps getting me to help him along with” as she has collaborated with the director since 2005’s Pride & Prejudice.
Life of Pi won in the fantasy film category against nominees Cloud Atlas, Prometheus, The Dark Knight Rises and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. These wins give both Anna Karenina and Life of Pi an edge in the Oscar race for best production design against fellow academy-nominated films The Hobbit, Les Miserables and Lincoln.
The contemporary film category went to Skyfall, and the entire Bond franchise was also honored with the Cinematic Imagery Award. Sir Ken Adam, Allan Cameron, Peter Lamont and Dennis Gassner (who accepted the award for Skyfall) were among the honorees. The 17th Annual ceremony took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
HBO’s Girls won for best half-hour, single-camera TV series. Of creator, writer, director and star Lena Dunham, Judy Becker said, “she’s the best.”
Best TV movie or miniseries went to Mark Worthington’s work on American Horror Story: Asylum while Game of Thrones won for one-hour single camera TV series.
Production designers Preston Ames, Richard MacDonald and Edward S. Stephenson were inducted into the ADG’s Hall of Fame. Herman Zuckerman, renowned production designer on numerous Star Trek series, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from presenter Scott Bakula.
The awards gala was sponsored by BMW with the theme Design in Motion and hosted by Paula Poundstone for the fourth year.
