As usual, HBO leads the Emmy Awards nominations (108) but streaming service Netflix made a dazzling debut reaping 14 bids, including Best Drama Series ("House of Cards").

HBO rebounded from last year's 81 bids to break into triple digits again. CBS and NBC are tied with 53 nominations, followed by ABC (45), Showtime (31), PBS (25) and FOX (19).

HBO's "Game of Thrones" is first among all dramas with 16 noms, including Best Drama Series. Other rivals for that top prize are AMC's "Breaking Bad," which netted 13 nominations and "Mad Men," which set a dubious Emmy record last year when it went 0 for 17. This year, the four-time drama champ contends for 12 awards as does PBS' "Downton Abbey."

Showtime's "Homeland" and stars Claire Danes and Damian Lewis return to defend their Emmy crowns. The sophomore season of the political drama reaped 11 bids in all.

Three-time comedy winner "30 Rock" (2007 - 2009) leads all laffers, earning 13 nominations for its farewell season on NBC including a bid for Best Comedy Series.

ABC's reigning three-time comedy series champ "Modern Family" defends its title with five of its six adult cast members numbering among its dozen nominations.

CBS' top-rated "The Big Bang Theory" contends in this category for a third year, netting eight nominations in total.

FX's "Louie" cracked the series race, as multi-hyphenate Louis C.K. earned a record nine nominations including four of the six for this show.

Two HBO sophmore laffers -- "Girls" and "Veep" -- round out the race with five noms each.

"American Horror Story" was introduced as a drama series on FX but was reclassified as a miniseries when it was revealed that each season will be distinct. It leads that genre with 17 nominations, including a bid for Best Movie/Miniseries.

Its competition for that award are HBO biopics "Behind the Candelabra" (15 nominations) and "Phil Spector" (8) as well as the BBC co-production "Parades End#" (5), Sundance's "Top of the Lake" (8), USA's "Political Animals" (5) and History's "The Bible" (3).

2013 Emmy Award Nominations: 'American Horror Story,' 'Game of Thrones' Lead, 'House of Card' Makes History Stonestreet-arrested-margul

http://www.goldderby.com/news/4567/primetime-emmys-nominations-shocking-snubs-arrested-development-julianna-margulies-eric-stonestreet-entertainment-news-08123902.html

Shocking Snubs of 2013 Emmys:

The Emmy nominations were full of surprises when it comes to who was nominated in this year's race, and they were equally surprising who was left out.

Among the most surprising was the nearly complete shutout of "Arrested Development," which received only a single acting nomination (Comedy Actor for Jason Bateman) and was snubbed in writing, directing, and Best Comedy Series. The series was nominated all three years of its original FOX run, winning in 2004, but Emmy voters rejected its Netflix revival.

Another previous winner left out of the race this year was Julianna Margulies, nominated three years in a row for "The Good Wife," winning in 2011.

Perhaps even more surprising was the snub of "Modern Family" star Eric Stonestreet, who had been nominated all three years of the show's run, winning twice (2010, 2012). He's the lone adult actor from the show sitting out this year's event.

"Boardwalk Empire" and its star Steve Buscemi had been nominated for Best Drama and Best Drama Actor the past two years. It was expected to fall out of the top category this time around, but Buscemi also surprisingly missed out on an acting bid this year.

FOX's "New Girl" also fell out of favor. Though many had expected a first-time nomination for lead-acting contender Jake Johnson, he was snubbed, as well 2012 acting nominees Zooey Deschanel and Max Greenfield.

It was a bad morning for FX dramas: "Justified" and "The Americans" were snubbed in almost alll major categories, though Margo Martindale received a Drama Guest Actress bid for "Americans"; she previously won Drama Supporting Actress in 2011 for "Justified."

"Downton Abbey" did well overall, with repeat nominations for many of its actors, but legendary actress Shirley MacLaine didn't make the cut for Drama Guest Actress for her role as Elizabeth McGovern's mother.

"House of Cards" also had a strong showing, including nominations for Drama Series, Drama Actor (Kevin Spacey), and Drama Actress (Robin Wright), but that didn't extend to supporting actor Corey Stoll, snubbed for his role as embattled congressman Peter Russo.

The Sundance miniseries "Top of the Lake" also did well, with nominations for Best Movie/Miniseries, Movie/Mini Actress (Elisabeth Moss), and Movie/Mini Supporting Actor (Peter Mullan), but Oscar-winner and multiple Emmy-winner Holly Hunter was left out of the Movie/Mini Supporting Actress race.

Even after an emotional breast-cancer storyline, nominations from the TCA and Critics' Choice, and an aggressive campaign by NBC, Monica Potter couldn't break through with her first nomination for "Parenthood."

And though "The Amazing Race" has dominated the Reality-Competition category for nine of the last 10 years, this year host Phil Keoghan was left off the ballot for Reality Host.

2013 Emmy Award Nominations: 'American Horror Story,' 'Game of Thrones' Lead, 'House of Card' Makes History Dern-britton-emmys

http://www.goldderby.com/news/4566/primetime-emmys-jaw-droppers-surprises-nominations-laura-dern-connie-britton-entertainment-news-02302233.html

Shocking Nominations of 2013 Emmys:

The Emmys welcomed no shortage of new blood, including a number of nominees most of our predictors at Gold Derby didn't see coming.

Connie Britton continues her streak of Emmy nominations: two Drama Actress bids in a row for "Friday Night Lights" in 2010 and 2011, a Movie/Mini Actress nod for "American Horror Story" in 2012, and now she returns to the Drama Actress race for the ABC music-industry soap "Nashville." She had been ranked 11th by our predictors.

Vera Farmiga also broke through in that category for A&E's freshman series "Bates Motel," a prequel to the horror classic "Psycho." She ranked ninth in our overall odds.

Laura Dern earned a Comedy Actress bid for HBO's "Enlightened," which was cancelled by the network after just two seasons. This is the fifth nomination for Dern, who was most recently in contention for the 2008 TV movie "Recount." Also a surprise nominee for the series was guest actress Molly Shannon.

"Glee," which seemed to have fallen out of favor at the Emmys, picked up repeat nominations for supporting actress Jane Lynch and guest actress Dot-Marie Jones, as well as a nomination for Comedy Directing, which the show won for its first season in 2010.

"Veep" was nominated again for Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Actress (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), but it also received surprise supporting nominations for Anna Chlumsky and Tony Hale. Hale's nomination is ironic; he was also eligible for "Arrested Development" but entered instead for "Veep," which proved a savvy move considering "Arrested's" poor showing overall.

Though he has been eligible in the past, Will Forte managed his first nomination for his guest-starring role on NBC's "30 Rock," playing Jane Krakowski's cross-dressing beau.

"Scandal" star Kerry Washington was nominated, as expected, but so was Dan Bucatinsky, who beat the odds to pick up a Drama Guest Actor bid.

Laura Linney was predicted to be nominated for Movie/Mini Actress, but her on-screen brother John Benjamin Hickey, a recent Tony winner for "The Normal Heart," also managed his first ever bid, for Movie/Mini Supporting Actor.

In the often static Reality Host race, Anthony Bourdain became a first-time nominee for the ABC competition series "The Taste." Heidi Klum returned to the race after three previous nominations, but this is the first time Tim Gunn is nominated alongside her.

"Boardwalk Empire" missed out on several key nominations, including Drama Series and Drama Actor (Steve Buscemi), but Bobby Cannavale picked up a Drama Supporting Actor bid for his performance as flamboyant villain Gyp Rosetti, as well as a return Comedy Guest Actor bid for "Nurse Jackie."

Charlotte Rampling, a recent surprise SAG nominee for the Sundance miniseries "Restless," managed to repeat at the Emmys with a bid for Movie/Mini Supporting Actress.

I am happy for most of the nominees but I am so sad that Arrested Development was mostly snubbed.

Same goes for Survivor and Jeff Probst..
