2013 Drama Actress Emmy Race: Out With The Old, In With The New For Margulies-washington%281%29

http://www.goldderby.com/news/4593/emmys-kerry-washington-scandal-julianna-margulies-entertainment-news-23908811.html

"Out with the old, in with the new" was certainly the TV Academy's sentiment given the shocking high-profile exclusions and refreshing inclusions among this year’s Emmy nominees for Best Drama Actress. But there are many similarities that can be found between the contenders who were snubbed and the newcomers who replaced them.

A pair of two-time Emmy champs were given the boot: Glenn Close ("Damages") and Julianna Margulies ("The Good Wife"), the latter of whom had seemed like a lock to return to the category. In place of Close, Vera Farmiga ("Bates Motel") and Robin Wright ("House of Cards") provide the category with movie-star gravitas, while Connie Britton ("Nashville") and Kerry Washington ("Scandal"), both nominated for ABC programs, replace Margulies as representatives of the broadcast networks.

Farmiga and Wright, like Close in 2008, are nodded for the debut seasons of their dark dramas, while Britton and Washington’s nominations indicate how well serialized dramas on the networks, specifically ABC, played for critics and audiences alike this past season, though the network's similarly soapy "Revenge" was snubbed across the board this year and last.

As for Margulies, perhaps being a big fish in the small broadcast network pond, which benefitted "The Good Wife" in previous years, was simply not enough this time. The nominees who returned this year – "Homeland's" Claire Danes, "Downton Abbey's" Michelle Dockery, and "Mad Men's" Elisabeth Moss – are featured on shows that still have healthy support across the board, while "The Good Wife" has slowly been losing support, with five nominations this year, down from seven in 2012 and nine in 2010 and 2011.
