Time Warner Cable went for the nuclear option: The cable provider has dropped CBS and Showtime from its lineup.
According to the networks, this marks the first time either has been fully dumped by a cable provider. The move comes as CBS (whose parent company owns Showtime) and TWC re-negotiate their carriage contract, with the top-rated broadcaster seeking more revenue for its popular programming. The networks gave TWC an option to continue airing their content while negotiations continued, yet the cable outlet elected to begin the process of pulling the plug at 5 p.m. EST on Friday, saying CBS “refused to have a productive discussion.”
The move follows weeks of negotiations and will impact millions of cable subscribers in several major TV markets, including New York, Los Angeles, Dallas and Boston.
“We deeply regret this ill-advised action, which is injurious not only to our many affected viewers, but also to Time Warner Cable itself,” CBS said in a statement. “Throughout this process, Time Warner Cable has conducted negotiations in a combative and non-productive spirit, indulging in pointless brinksmanship and distorted public positioning … What CBS seeks, and what we always have sought from the beginning, is fair compensation for the most-watched television network with the most popular content in the world. We will not accept less … We hope and believe this period of darkness will be short and that we can all get back to the business.”
“The service interruption is not only completely unnecessary, but totally punitive to our subscribers, and will impact and inconvenience millions,” added Showtime in a statement. “Unfortunately, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks subscribers will be denied access to new episodes of the climactic eighth and final season of Dexter, and the most popular freshman series the network has ever had, Ray Donovan.” Both the dramas have new episodes on Sunday night.
Time Warner Cable issued this response: “We agreed to an extension on Tuesday morning with the expectation that we would engage in a meaningful negotiation with CBS. Since then, CBS has refused to have a productive discussion. It’s become clear that no matter how much time we give them, they’re not willing to come to reasonable terms. We thank our customers for their patience and support as we continue to fight hard to keep their prices down.”

| My father works for (and I worked there for a period during my college days) a regional cable company. With no Comcast, TWC is the main competitor along with the satellite providers. Practically every year TWC struggles with negotiations with one of the major channels at either a local or national level and it always goes on longer than it should. Sometimes its TWC's fault, other's it isn't, but either it's pretty hilarious. I have to be grateful for their errors though, as their unsatisfied customers helped me get through college relatively debt free. | |

never bought Showtime...don't care for movie channels. Oh but Showtime has some really amazing Series, best on all Cable Networks IMO like Shameless, Nurse jackie, House of Lies, Episodes, Dexter, Web Therapy, i watch a LOT of their shows, such great quality stuff. Shameless is still my #1 show on television, there is nothing that compares IMO, you should really get the DVD's lol. They had great shows like Weeds, United States of Tara, The Big C, which i all highly recomend for lazy sunday afternoons, get the DVD's trust me, worth it, and with The Big C, have your tisssues for Season Finale 1 and 2, i cried like a baby.

| Weeds was on way too long. The first few seasons were pretty good, but they jumped the shark by like the 3rd or 4th season.
Not to go off topic, but I think HBO > Showtime.

| Nah I think HBO has really went down as of late, the only thing they have going for them are Game of Thrones, The Newsroom and Boardwalk Empire.
Veep is petty funny but their losing money with it, same with Girls, though both are award succes.
True Blood has great following but unlike all their other shows has lost all award momentum they have.
I think Showtime has really stepped up and is delivering real quality shows, Nurse Jackie, Shameless, Episodes, Dexter, Californication, Homeland, House of Lies have all been winning awards like crazy, while Web Therapy is super cheap to make.
Also their new shows seem very promising like Ray Donavan, Master of Sex and Penny Dreadfull.
I love their portrayal of female leads in their comedies and all have won Emmy's and Golden Globes for their roles, Mary Louise Parker, Laura Linney, Edie Falco, Toni-Collette all won awards in a row behind each other.
I think with alternative programming HBO beats out Showtime but with scripted original Programming, HBO has fallen a lot. All the other networks like AMC, Showtime, A&E have really stepped up in bringing quality programming.

| Oh but Weeds, had a horrible 6th and 7th season IMO, especially the 6th that seemed to have no direction at all, but it ended well, so i'm happy with that.
The only highlight of season 6 was, i got to see Zack Morris' butt, and that's about it.

| Yeah I was probably pretty selfish in my hypothesis that HBO > Showtime. It's kind of funny you bring up the dominance of female leads in Showtime programming, because I was going to make that connection between gender identity and the premium channels. I like HBO because of shows like Eastbound, Newsroom, Curb Your Enthusiasm, etc. Entourage and How To Make It helped me figure myself out as a young adult in college. They kind of made me recognize me the darkest parts about myself.
I don't really care for Veep, and Girls seems very well constructed from the episodes I've seen, I just never got past the early part of season 1. But yeah this all teaches me that I need to watch more tv.

| Lol the HBO shows i watch are The Newsroom and Game of Thrones oh and Veep, but that's because of my love for Julia-Louise Dreyfuss lol. Girls is meh, I watched Season 2, was bleh.
Showtime i watch Shameless, Episodes, Web Therapy, Homeland and House of Lies.
Watched Season 1 & 2 of Nurse Jackie (still need to continue) and liked the Pilot of Ray Donovan.
and i watched United States of Tara, Weeds, The Big C, Dead Like Me, Queer as Folk, Secret Diary of a Call girl ...lol guess I like a lot of Showtime Programming
While HBO it used to be Enlightened and How to Make it in America, Hung and Bored to Death...and miss em all lol.

| I felt like Bored to Death was going to be a show I liked, and then I ended up not really getting into it. I like all the actors involved, but I never found myself excited to see the show. It's on my to-do list along with The Wire, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and figuring out if Aubrey Plaza is actually funny. | |
