Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Studios officially announced today that Star Wars: Episode VII will open in theaters on December 18, 2015. The film is currently in pre-production.
Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios said of the announcement, "We're very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture."
The film is being directed by J.J. Abrams and is currently being scripted by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing the film. Tommy Harper and Jason McGatlin are serving as executive producers.
Shooting for the film is set to begin in spring 2014 at Pinewood Studios.
