nside Llewyn Davis" beat Oscar frontunner "12 Years a Slave" to claim the Best Picture prize at the Gotham Awards, which are bestowed by the New York-based Independent Feature Project that salutes achievement in indie films.
The award for Best Actor went to Matthew McConaughey, who accepted remotely via iPhone as "Dallas Buyers' Club" costar Jared Leto stood in at the podium. As he listened on the phone, Leto told the audience, "He said, 'All right, all right, all right …'" Below: watch a video of the full ceremony to see highlights like this of the awards show.
The Best Actress trophy went to Brie Larson as a supervisor in a foster home for teens in "Short Term 12."
This year the Gotham Awards split the lead acting category into traditional, gender-specific prizes but relegated all supporting performances to the single breakthrough category. It also eliminated the ensemble award.
"12 Years a Slave" initially led with the most nominations (three), but won nothing.
Last year, "Moonrise Kingdom" won Best Feature but was snubbed at the Oscars while "Your Sister's Sister" took Best Ensemble. Two years ago, "Beginners" and eventual Oscar nominee "The Tree of Life" shared the Best Feature prize while "Beginners" also won Best Ensemble. "The Descendants" lost both those races but also reaped a Best Picture Oscar bid. In 2010, "Winter's Bone" won Best Feature and Ensemble.
