On Tuesday, the Producers Guild of America announced nominees for its television awards, which echo those of the most recent Emmys. Indeed, just as the guild follows the motion picture academy's eligibility period by considering films released during the 2013 calendar year, so too it heeds to the TV academy's schedule and nominates programs airing between June 1, 2012 and May 31, 2013.
Four-time Emmy winner "Modern Family" defends its PGA title against three-time PGA winner "30 Rock," returning nominee "The Big Bang Theory," the reboot of "Arrested Development" and category newcomer "Veep." All but "Arrested" contended at the Emmys too.
Five of the six Emmy nominees for top drama series are also in contention for the PGA prize, with only two-time PGA winner "Mad Men" snubbed. Reigning Emmy winner "Breaking Bad" faces off against reigning PGA champ "Homeland" as well as past PGA winners "Boardwalk Empire" and "Downton Abbey," which won Best TV Movie/Miniseries in 2011, and returning nominee "Game of Thrones."
Among non-fiction programming, reigning PGA champ "American Masters" and "Deadliest Catch" were snubbed in favor of "30 for 30" and "Duck Dynasty" which contend against returning nominees "Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown," "Inside the Actors Studio" and "Shark Tank."
Two-time live entertainment/talk PGA winner "The Colbert Report" is up against the same lineup as last year: "Jimmy Kimmel Live," "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," "Real Time with Bill Maher" and "Saturday Night Live."
Ten-time Emmy winner and current PGA champ for competiton series "The Amazing Race" contends against 2010 Emmy winner "Top Chef," "Dancing With the Stars," "Project Runway" and "The Voice."
The nominees for top TV movie or mini-series will be announced along with the film contenders on Jan. 2. The 25th annual PGA Awards will be handed out on Jan. 19 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
