Bombs are being dropped at the developer-only Steam Dev Days event, where Valve managing director Gabe Newell said “Our goal is to make Greenlight go away. Not because it’s not useful, but because we’re evolving.”
Steam Greenlight is a voting system that was launched in 2012 to help indie developers get their games distributed digitally on Steam by building and fostering communities around them. The games that are then welcomed by the community are eventually rewarded with a greenlight. It’s a flawed system that would benefit from added regulation, but it looks like Valve is instead going to phase it out entirely as they continue to “evolve.”
This decision won’t cause indie developers to lose a valuable tool. In its place, Valve is planning to remove the barrier between development and publishing by offering devs more control.
In related news, Steam’s mad growth doesn’t look to be slowing down. Back in October, they announced the service had 65 million active users. Yesterday, they boasted 75 million. That’s an impressive 10 million new active users in just three months. Not too bad.
