The Producers Guild of America may not have clarified the Oscar race as much as we expected, awarding two winners in an unprecedented tie for Best Picture: "Gravity" and "12 Years a Slave," leaving out their closest Oscar rival, "American Hustle," which had just won top honors on Saturday night from the Screen Actors Guild.

Also numbering among the 10 PGA nominees were five more of the Oscar contenders for Best Picture: "Captain Phillips," "Dallas Buyers Club," "Her," "Nebraska," and "The Wolf of Wall Street." However, the academy snubbed PGA nominees "Blue Jasmine" and "Saving Mr. Banks" with Brit hit "Philomena" getting the ninth slot in the Oscar race.

The guild and Oscars have agreed on 17 of the most recent 24 Best Picture champs, including the last six in a row. Key to the import of this precursor prize is that it picks a winner using the same kind of counting as the Oscars -- the preferential ballot.

Best Animated Feature went to Disney's "Frozen," which is favored to repeat that win at the Oscars.

None of this year's Oscar contenders for Best Documentary were nominated by PGA, which chose "We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks" over "A Place at the Table," "Far Out Isn't Far Enough," "Life According to Sam," and "Which Way is the Front Line From Here?"

The winners of the television awards mostly echoed those of the most recent Emmys. Indeed, just as the guild follows the motion picture academy's eligibility period by considering films released during the 2013 calendar year, so too it heeds to the TV academy's schedule and nominates programs airing between June 1, 2012 and May 31, 2013.

Four-time Emmy winner "Modern Family" successfully defended its PGA title against three-time PGA winner "30 Rock," returning nominee "The Big Bang Theory," the reboot of "Arrested Development," and category newcomer "Veep."

"Breaking Bad" won Best Drama Series, following top wins at the Emmys, Golden Globes, and SAG Awards. Five of the six Emmy nominees were in contention for the PGA prize. the others were last year's PGA champ "Homeland," as well as past PGA winners "Boardwalk Empire" and "Downton Abbey," which won Best TV Movie/Miniseries in 2011, and returning nominee "Game of Thrones."

"Behind the Candelabra" also continued its awards-show romp, winning Best Longform TV Program following wins at SAG, the Golden Globes, and the Emmys.

"Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown" won Best Non-Fiction TV Series, beating "30 for 30," "Duck Dynasty," "Inside the Actors Studio," and "Shark Tank." Reigning PGA champ "American Masters" was not nominated.

Live Entertainment/Talk Series went to defending champ "The Colbert Report," which was up against the same lineup as last year: "Jimmy Kimmel Live," "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," "Real Time with Bill Maher" and "Saturday Night Live."

There was a new winner for Best Competition TV Series: "The Voice," which blocked "The Amazing Race" from a third consecutive win in the category. NBC's singing competition also bested the perennially winning "Race" at the Emmys.

Other winners included "SportsCenter" (Sports Series), "Sesame Street" (Children's Series), and "Wired: What's Inside" (Digital Series).

Producers Guild Awards mystery solved: How did Best Picture tie happen?

http://www.goldderby.com/news/5492/producers-guild-awards-pga-winners-best-picture-gravity-12-years-a-slave-oscars-movie-news-13579086.html

When Ben Affleck announced that "Gravity" and "12 Years a Slave" had tied for Best Picture at the Producers Guild Awards Sunday, he sent a shock wave through Hollywood.

We Oscarologists count on these kudos to give us clarity as to what film will win the top prize at the Academy Awards. After all, the PGA uses the same system of voting -- the preferential ballot -- as the motion picture academy and has predicted all five winners of the Best Picture Oscar since that field expanded to more than five in 2009.

Since then, the members of the PGA and motion picture academy -- each of whom number about 6,000 -- have ranked their respective Best Picture nominees. If one nominee garners more than 50% of the first-place votes, it will be named Best Picture. If, as is more likely, no nominee reaches this threshold, the film with the fewest first place votes is eliminated, with its ballots being reapportioned to the second place choice.

Should no film cross the required 50% + one ballot threshold at this point, the film with the fewest first place votes is again eliminated, with its ballots being apportioned to the next choice still in play (i.e., if the second place choice on a ballot is no longer in the running, then the ballot would be reapportioned to the third place choice and so on.)

This process of elimination and reapportion continues until one film reaches at least 50% + one ballots. This year, two films -- "Gravity" and "12 Years a Slave" -- had the exact same number of ballots which ranked each higher than the other. These were a combination of original number one votes and subsequent reallocations from films that were dropped.

While this may seem mathematically improbable, you can be sure that the accountants repeated the counting process several times when they determined that two pictures were tied for the top award.

Could we have a tie at the Oscars too?

Absolutely. While it has happened with other categories -- which are decided by a popular vote that awards the Oscar to the nominee who tops the most ballots -- there is no reason it couldn't occur in the Best Picture race as well. [If you click on the link you can relive the moment from 1968 when Ingrid Bergman was left momentarily speechless when she opened the Best Actress envelope and saw two names -- Katharine Hepburn ("The Lion in Winter") and Barbra Streisand ("Funny Girl").]
