Another horror franchise is getting the reboot treatment. According to Deadline, Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe are moving ahead with a reboot of the American version of The Grudge. The original American version was released in 2004 and starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, based on Takashi Shimizu's Japanese horror franchise of the same name.
Shimizu also directed the American remake, which (along with The Ring) kicked off the J-horror craze of the mid-'00s and popularized the onryo ghost amongst American audiences. The franchise took a quick downward turn with 2006's The Grudge 2, which came in on the tail end of the craze, and The Grudge 3 went straight to video. The Japanese franchise is still going strong with its seventh entry, Ju-on: The Beginning of the End, coming out this year.
The rebooted film will see Jeff Buhler (Midnight Meat Train) writing the script.
