James Gunn has revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy has the long game in mind. Gunn told EW that the summer Marvel film will set the groundwork for The Avengers 3.
Gunn told the site that Guardians is "definitely connected to Avengers 3." This appears to be teasing the idea of Thanos appearing in the third Avengers film; we already know that Thanos is appearing at some point in Guardians via motion-capture and Karen Gillan plays his daughter Nebula in the film. Gunn said that the deadly villain will be the "head of the snake" in terms of what the motley team of heroes is dealing with in the August 1st release.
Gunn also talked about Star-Lord's background and Thanos' relation to Gamora and Nebula, stating, "[Star Lord] was abducted from Earth (Missouri) at age 8 and raised in a group of thieves and smuggles called the Ravagers. He's good with the ladies and a little bit of a dick and very lucky. Thanos slaughtered [Gamora's] family and Nebula's, then raised them together as siblings. They were bio engineered to become living weapons, so he's really good at killing people."
The film stars Chris Pratt, Gillan, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close and Benicio del Toro.
