Just when you thought Hollywood couldn't surprise you anymore, here come the Peeps to prove you wrong. Adam Rifkin (Detroit Rock City, Underdog) has optioned the film and TV rights to the sugary marshmallow candy Peeps along with producers Brent Tinter and Brian E. Rochlin. From a business perspective, it's actually a good idea. Just Born, the Bethlehem, PA company that creates the fluffy treats, sells $2 billion worth of Peeps every year domestically and has been trying to explore Peeps-related merchandise.
Rifkin is hoping to put together a feature-length animated film similar to The Lego Movie. It will be set the night before a Peeps diorama contest. One of the delectable morsels gets misplaced and has to travel through the various themed dioramas to get back to his own before the judging begins. Rifkin got the idea by watching his niece and nephew create their own diorama for a school project. He then found out there were actual contests, including one by The Washington Post. This year's winner for that contest was a black and white diorama of Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech...made entirely of peeps.
The plan is to work with a studio and bring in the pre-existing intellectual property, like Warner Bros did with LEGO, DC Comics and other historical/pop culture figures. The creative team are putting together story points before Rifkin writes a script.
