Elsa from Frozen Makes Her Debut on Once Upon a Time

By Anthony CoutoIn a shocking twist from Once Upon a Time’s Season 3 finale, the show teased the icy arm of… (no, not Nora Fries) none other than Elsa from the Oscar-winning animated film, Frozen!
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producers Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz confirmed, “That Was Elsa," and opened up about bringing the Disney princess from the massive blockbuster -- now the sixth highest grossing movie ever with over a billion dollars brought in so far -- to the small screen.
Kitsis discusses the complexity of Elsa as a character, saying, “[What] we loved so much about the character of Elsa was that she was considered a villain but she never really was. She was misunderstood. That, on our show, speaks to us so strongly, that it was a toy we had to play with. “
The producers say it was their own idea to bring the Frozen character on the show, not a mandate from ABC parent company Disney. “We are honored to be allowed to do it. We loved the movie. We fell in love with it when it came out last year like everyone did, and we want to do our best to do it justice,” says Horowitz.

Horowitz says Disney’s input over the character’s portrayal on the show is no different than Snow White, noting, “...it’s just a hundred year difference. Our scripts and our ideas get vetted by the studio and the network and Disney’s brand management people, and I’m sure that process will continue.”
On casting Elsa, the decision has yet to be made. “Honestly, we literally delivered the finale on Friday. We’ve got two weeks now to decompress a little bit,” admits Horowitz. Kitsis says she hopes to see Elsa on the show as early as the Season 4 premiere.
