Welcome to Diva Dirt’s This Week in History, where each week we’ll take a look back at some of the most memorable moments in women’s wrestling from years gone by.
So, join us in taking a trip down memory lane…
*October 28th, 1999 | After defeating Jeff Jarrett and winning the Intercontinental Championship, Chyna soon found a new foe in Chris Jericho. In the midst of his quest to take Chyna’s IC Title, Jericho faced off against “Chyna”, who was really Stevie Richards in drag. Cute, huh? Chyna thought so too–that’s why she showed up and cost Jericho the match with a shot to the face from her title belt. When Richards hugged her in gratitude, she socked him too, leaving both men lying in the ring.
*October 23rd, 2001 | Even if you’re not a fan of the current Divas Championship climate, you should thank your lucky stars that the title is not being defended like this.. In the early days of Trish Stratus‘s in-ring career, she competed for Lita‘s Women’s Championship in a Bra & Panties match. While far from being the worst Bra & Panties match we’ve seen, the match did nothing for the title’s prestige. It makes us thankful for every title defense in which the Divas stay clothed.
*October 29th, 2007 | The (so-far) final season of the Diva Search saw its champion crowned in the typical Monday Night Raw fanfare. It was down to Eve Torres and Brooke Gilbertsen and, as you’re all aware, Eve emerged the winner, going on to become the first Diva Search winner to win the Divas Championship. Eve and Layla remain as the only Diva Search winners still with the company.
*October 28th, 2010 | Mickie James and Tara didn’t see fit to wait until Impact started to settle their differences, and were already fighting backstage when the show opened. The two traveled from catering to outside the Universal Studios soundstage, beating the crap out of each other. Madison Rayne soon came to the aid of Tara and the two-woman fight soon evolved into an all-out brawl between numerous Knockouts, including Angelina Love, Velvet Sky and Sarita. When the action brought them all to the ring, Ric Flair took it upon himself to break up the brawl, and received a few knocks for his trouble.
*October 27th, 2006, October 29th, 2007 & October 29th, 2010 | Much like elementary school children and college co-eds, the Divas rarely miss the chance to dress up for Halloween, and when the holiday rolls around they’re usually donning costumes to compete in contests or matches. Three bouts in particular (Battle Royals in 2006 & 2007 and an 8-Diva tag team match in 2010) occurred this week in history, featuring the likes of Alicia Fox, Ashley Massaro, Brie Bella, Brooke Tessmacher, Jillian, Kelly Kelly, Kristal Marshall, Layla, Maria, Melina, Michelle McCool, Mickie James, Nikki Bella, Rosa Mendes, Torrie Wilson and Victoria.
