Commentators Banned

In an interesting development, WWE has implemented a new policy where the commentators are banned from naming the referees in the matches.

Commentators on Raw, Smackdown, and ECW are still allowed to mention the referees, but management does not want them to specifically call them by their names.

For decades now, the role of being a referee has been one where you stay out of the spotlight. If you do your job correctly, then the fans don't even notice that you're there.

There has been a few exceptions where the referees do get the spotlight. Theodore Long, Nick Patrick, Dave Hebner & Earl Hebner, Bill Alphonso, and Charles Robinson have all been involved in various storylines before.

Bobby Lashley in TNA

On February 4, 2008, Bobby Lashley surprised the entire wrestling world when he was finally released from his contract and walked away from WWE.
At the time, it was difficult for wrestling fans to fathom how someone could walk away from an eventual huge push. Vince McMahon had envisioned big things for Bobby Lashley.
Bobby Lashley once again surprised the wrestling world when he announced his intentions to pursue an MMA career. He surprised them even more when he was able to do pretty well in his matches.
On April 19, 2009, Bobby Lashley pulled off his biggest shocker yet. He made a surprising appearance at the TNA Lockdown pay per view.
With that appearance, Bobby Lashley is now in TNA.

When Bobby Lashley made his TNA debut, there was a lot of confusion as to whether or not it was a permanent thing.
Rumors began swirling around about his contract status with TNA.
Some believed that he had signed a deal with TNA. Others believed that it was just a one time appearance.
Well, the truth of the matter is that Bobby Lashley isn't just making one appearance with TNA. He's going to be around for a bit.
Even though he will be working for TNA, Bobby Lashley will still continue to pursue his MMA opportunities. TNA has a good history of allowing their wrestlers to pursue other interests.

Now that we know that Bobby Lashley is going to be sticking around for a little bit, let's take a look at the possible programs that he can have in TNA.

  • Booker T - Bobby Lashley and Booker T have a close personal relationship in real life. Their characters also have a history together in WWE. It makes sense for these two to be involved in a program together.
  • Brutus Magnus - A battle between two young muscular wrestlers makes too much sense to not do.
  • Hernandez - This might be more suited for an episode of TNA iMPACT!, but there's very few big men in wrestling that are as agile as Hernandez and Bobby Lashley.
  • Jeff Jarrett - Jeff Jarrett and Bobby Lashley have never worked a program together, so this would be a fresh new matchup for TNA to throw out.
  • Kevin Nash - Kevin Nash is well past his physical prime, but a matchup against Bobby Lashley is still intriguing.
  • Kurt Angle - Kurt Angle and Bobby Lashley have worked together before in WWE. This is still a pay per view main event match.
  • Matt Morgan - Vince McMahon would hate to see a matchup between these two guys. They're both big guys that he was really hoping to turn into big stars but walked away from him.
  • Mick Foley - Mick Foley can more than carry an opponent on the mic (which is something that is not Bobby Lashley's strengths). A feud between these two for the title feels right.
  • Samoa Joe - Samoa Joe is the heart and soul of TNA (along with AJ Styles). He needs to face opponents with credibility, which is what Bobby Lashley has thanks to his WWE stint.
  • Scott Steiner - Scott Steiner is past his prime, but a battle between these two physical specimen would be interesting still.
  • Sting - One of the appeal of joining TNA is to have the chance at working with a legend like Sting. These two guys have to cross paths sooner or later.

Buddy Rose Passes Away

Former wrestling star "Playboy" Buddy Rose has passed away.

Buddy Rose, whose real name is Paul Perschmann, passed away on April 28, 2009. He was found dead in his home in Vancouver, Washington by his wife.

The former AWA World Tag Team Champion was used as a main event heel when WWE had him challenging then world champion Bob Backlund. He was good enough to have headlined shows at Madison Square Garden.

Younger wrestling fans may remember him from his later stint in WWE where he used his weight gain as part of his gimmick. Buddy Rose would always have the announcer state his weight as something that was ridiculously lower than what he really weighed.

Buddy Rose's first wrestling match ever was against Sgt. Slaughter. He worked under a mask at the very first Wrestlemania against Tito Santana.

Is the Legacy Stable a True Success?

Before going any further, lets make sure that everybody understands what a stable is designed to do.

A stable is built around a single, pair, or group of individuals in the hopes of not only keeping the pinnacle figure relevant, but to also groom and create new stars who can then take care of themselves as a commodity going forward. In the most basic of definitions, a stable is just another tool used to create new stars with the assistance of an already established star.

Stables are supposed to introduce new stars to the elite level whether it be lackeys within the stable rising up, or stars being put up against the stable and doing the same.

The 4 Horsemen produced a myriad of not only stars, but legends. The Andersons, Sid Vicious, and even Sting are products of that stable. I kept the list rather short - this is not an article about one of the greatest stables of all time.

NWO launched Konnan, Scott Hall, a solo Scott Steiner, Big Show, and Kevin Nash into the wrestling atmosphere. Stars already known by many were now icons to all. NWO also did the utterly impossible. It rocketed main event wrestlers into a new category of ultra elite main attraction wrestlers. Prior to the NWO, you wouldn't have thought that Hogan or Sting could reach a level any higher. NWO allowed them to do so.

Evolution shot Batista and Randy Orton into the sky. The Christian Coalition handed the keys to Tomko only to watch him wreck it all on his own. Main Event Mafia did what it was supposed to do. Secure Joe and Styles on that elite level.

You see, stables are great and all, but they all have the exact same building block needed to inject new life into a wrestling promotion. It is a basic component, yet an essential one.

Those involved in the stable have to pull their own weight in their own storylines while aligned with the stable they're in.

Arn Anderson was allowed to dominate a sick TV title scene while being on call to utterly destroy people at Flair's discretion. Sid Vicious became a cult hero while he was aligned. Sting was a 4 Horsemen terrorist once he returned from "injury". Randy Orton and Batista were allowed to grow in their own programs and then against HHH and the stable. The same for the NWO and the CC. The same for the MEM.

Much like La Familia members Hawkins and Ryder. Rhodes and DiBiase basically do the bidding for Randy Orton. His storyline is their storyline, and that's it. They haven't been allowed to do anything on their own in any other WWE division. This is fine, to a degree, but it's getting very close to that tipping point of irrelevance.

If Legacy is going to be a success, then WWE is going to have to allow Rhodes and DiBiase the time to do something on their own while serving Randy Orton when he needs them. A match here or there while part of Randy's storyline isn't enough to put them out there on their own.

For now, the Legacy stable is still all about Randy Orton and can be for a little longer. If something isn't done soon, though, Rhodes and DiBiase won't gain anything from being aligned with Randy.

Something needs to be done quickly.

TNA Releases Roxxi

Roxxi Laveaux has been released by TNA.

A couple of weeks ago, Roxxi Laveaux was involved in a backstage incident with fellow TNA Knockout Rhaka Khan. Roxxi Laveaux decided to confront Rhaka Khan backstage because she was working too stiff with her during a match.

The two were reportedly suspended for 60 days because of the incident. However, Roxxi Laveaux recently made a statement through her Twitter account that confirmed that she is no longer with TNA.

Despite not having been a TNA Knockout Champion, Roxxi Laveaux still managed to achieve a high level of popularity, especially after she had her head shaved in a storyline.

Overseas Wrestlemania

For years now, wrestling fans from overseas have been wondering when WWE would hold a Wrestlemania pay per view in their country.

Well, Vince McMahon recently made statements that suggest that an overseas Wrestlemania may never happen.

On May 1, 2009, WWE held their annual shareholders. Vince McMahon was asked about the possibility of holding Wrestlemania on another continent.

The chairman explained that it was difficult to do one because of the time difference. With the majority of WWE fans in the United States, the event would have to be broadcast live during the evening hours, which makes it difficult to pull off in another country.

Vince McMahon also referenced how the company once tried doing a Summerslam from London, England, and it failed miserably (in terms of business). Since that event was in 1992, it doesn't appear as if it is something that WWE is working very hard to pursue.

WWE Superheroes

WWE has a feature in their magazine where they list which wrestler would be good as a superhero.

  • John Cena - Captain America
  • Chris Jericho - Green Arrow
  • Hornwoggle - MODOK
  • Triple H - Thor
  • Melina - Wonder Woman
  • CM Punk - Nightwing
  • Kelly Kelly - Ms Marvel
  • Edge - Aquaman
  • Beth Phoenix - Power Girl
  • William Regal - Captain Britain
  • Mark Henry - Luke Cage
  • Mr Kennedy - Iron Fist
  • Mike Knox - Hercules

Bischoff Rejects WWE Deal

WWE recently contacted Eric Bischoff for a project, and he promptly rejected it. The former President of WCW released the following comments about the situation.

Quote:

"They called and asked me to be a part of it and I declined. No desire to give credibility to their revisionist hist."
Quote:

"Chose not to participate in WWE's latest revisionist history initiative for many reasons including the obvious one."

Word has it that WWE wanted Eric Bischoff to be involved in the production of a brand new DVD called "The Rise and Fall of WCW". The DVD is expected to be similar to the one that WWE did for ECW.

The company will obviously continue to product the DVD without Eric Bischoff's involvement. It is expected that the company will be taking some jabs at Eric Bischoff on the DVD now.

Batista vs. Orton: Too Soon?

Batista made his shocking return to WWE the night after Wrestlemania 25. Many people had expected him to remain on the injured reserve for a couple of more months.
However, there he was, back in the ring, and back in the main event scene.
WWE immediately placed him into the top storyline on Raw. He was paired up with Shane McMahon and Triple H in their war against Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton, and Ted DiBiase.
The six men were involved in a tag team match at Backlash, where Triple H was seen carted away on the stretcher.
That gave WWE the opportunity to transition into a program between Randy Orton and Batista.
Of course, this feud happened a year too soon.

When should this match happen? Wrestlemania 26 sounds good.
Without new main event wrestlers being created, WWE is having a much harder time trying to come up with matches that can truly headline Wrestlemanias.
There's only so many different matchups that they can do with Shawn Michaels, Undertaker, Triple H, Randy Orton, Edge, Batista, and John Cena before they run out of Wrestlemania main event matches.
We've seen it all.
It's no secret that Batista and Randy Orton came up together in the Evolutio stable. Thanks to the rub from Triple H and Ric Flair, the two wrestlers were able to step up into the main event scene.
When Randy Orton was unceremoniously dumbed by the group, Batista decided that it was best for him to turn on the third generation star and remain with Evolution.
Randy Orton has already gained his revenge against Ric Flair and Triple H. He has yet to gain revenge on Batista for turning on him.
That right there is enough of a storyline to headline Wrestlemania 26.

The big reason why WWE had to jump the gun on this feud is because they really don't have a lot of options right now.
Let's take a look at the babyface wrestlers that Randy Orton could work with.
Wrestling fans were ready to take a break from seeing Randy Orton and Triple H feuding. In fact, it was a brilliant move by the company to write Triple H out of the storyline for the time being.
John Cena is a main event wrestler, and he does have some good chemistry with Randy Orton. However, putting John Cena back into the main event title program right now might cause the fans to complain again.
Guys like Kofi Kingston, Mr Kennedy, and MVP simply are not on the main event level just yet.
Shawn Michaels would be an interesting choice, but he really needed the time off after Wrestlemania 25. His body needs the break.
So, WWE didn't have much choice but to use Batista as the challenger for Randy Orton and the WWE Heavyweight Championship.
