I guess he didn't mind having an audience. . . ^^ Link has video. (April 3) -- Authorities in an upstate New York town say a 16-year-old gunman chased one of his classmates into the foyer of the local police station and opened fire, pumping a bullet into his victim's arm and then shooting himself in the chin.
According to a statement released by police in Cooperstown, N.Y., the suspect on Friday followed his Cooperstown High School classmate, also 16, into police headquarters next to the National Baseball Hall of Fame. There, he allegedly fired two shots from a small-caliber rifle, one hitting the victim's left arm and another ricocheting through a station wall, narrowly missing the lone officer on duty.
When Officer James Cox ordered the suspect to lower his weapon, the shooter stepped back and shot himself in the chin, the statement said.
"As soon as the gun was dropped, the officer on the scene grabbed the gun, cleared it and made sure that it was safe," Cooperstown Police Chief Diana Nicols told Utica's WKTV-TV.
Police said investigators are looking into whether the the gunman, who is white, was motivated by racial hatred in shooting the other boy, who is black. Nicols said a hate crime charge is possible but she declined to explain why authorities believe race may have been a factor, according to The Associated Press.
According to reports, both boys were treated at Bassett Medical Center, with the victim being released as of 9:30pm Friday night and the shooter remaining hospitalized with a serious wound.
Local teenagers told the Utica Observer-Dispatch the boys were neither friends nor enemies and said they were unaware of a previous contact between the two. One of the teens, Ethan diLorenzo, said the alleged shooter is a "pretty cool kid" who "keeps to himself and is usually pretty laid back." DiLorenzo said he is a good friend of the victim, an Eagle Scout who he says is "really athletic and loud."
"I can't believe it," DiLorenzo said. "This is the last thing I would have expected to hear."
According to police, the conflict began around 3 p.m., when witnesses said they saw the shooter driving around the Baseball Hall of Fame's library circular parking lot in an SUV.
"Witnesses said he drove around the circle four of five times," Nicols tod the Observer-Dispatch. "He stopped the car and got out with a rifle."
Reports said the suspect spoke to three teens before all three ran away, with one heading in the direction of the Cooperstown Police station.
"We believe the victim may have been running to the police station in an attempt to get to a safe location," the police statement said.
The suspect allegedly chased the victim into the foyer of the station, where he began firing his rifle and ultimately shot himself in the chin.
Nicols told WKTV-TV it was fortunate that the victim ran into police headquarters, possibly protecting the hundreds of tourists and locals who were walking outside downtown Cooperstown on Good Friday.
"As much as you can be grateful anything like this happens, I'm very grateful that it happened in front of the police station, where there was an officer who could order this suspect to drop his gun," Nicols said. "If it was out in the park across the street, it might have had a very different ending." | |
