Robert Pattinson Wanted for 'Daredevil' Reboot

Back in 2003, Ben Affleck donned some red tights and became Matt Murdock – better known to comic fans as 'Daredevil.' Comic movies weren't quite as popular as they are now, but 'Daredevil' did respectable business at the box office, breaking the 100 million dollar mark. Stories about "The Man Without Fear" might have turned into a feature film franchise if Fox hadn't tried to create a spin-off series with 'Elektra.' That film didn't come close to the 100 mil mark – it lost money – and more importantly, its ties to 'Daredevil' basically killed the idea of doing a sequel.

That was practically 5 years ago, and in Hollywood time passes in something approximating dog years. With superhero flicks still doing healthy business at the box office, Fox has decided it's time to bring 'Daredevil' back into the fold. The only problem is Ben Affleck has no desire to return to the role. No problem – they can just reboot it!

Director David Slade, who's helmed the vampire film '30 Days of Night' and teen vampire romance 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' was hired to bring the saga of Matt Murdock to life for a new generation. That's immediately inspired speculation that 'Twilight' star Robert Pattinson may don Daredevil's skintight red suit. Cue fanboy howling now.

Slade's updating of the character is reportedly "a bit Batman Begins. The bad guy will learn who Daredevil really is and tries to destroy him – but not via the usual methods." It's also supposedly going to be bright and upbeat, too – which could be something of a red flag.

Casting Pattinson is a really interesting idea in our estimation. The actor isn't as awful as 'Twilight' haters would have you believe and it's not as if playing Matt Murdock requires a Marlon Brando-caliber actor to pull off in the first place. What is weird is that casting Pattinson would make 'Daredevil' seem awfully young. Matt Murdock's old enough to have been through law school. Pattinson looks like he shaves once a month whether he needs to or not.

Of course, there's no guarantee the actor would take the part even if offered. Sure, Fox would love to have him onboard if for no other reason than it might get his female fanbase into the theater to see a superhero film, but even that's not a given. The potential snag here is that Pattinson seems more interested in doing serious arthouse roles than big budget mainstream movies these days.

If Pattinson should be offered the role and pass, there's no shortage of other potential candidates who could take the role. Jason Statham practically volunteered to play the part back in 2008, for example. We love Statham, but we're also not convinced he's entirely right for the role. However, one Internet commenter offered up a choice that was quite intriguing: 'Dexter's' Michael C. Hall. Now that would be some inspired casting. What do you guys think? I could see why they want him, he can pull off a dark-ish good guy, because he's just not that attractive.
