A show Beth and Melina used to tear the house down in a few years ago is now percieving Kelly and Bellas as the top diva fued over the title.

Something very telling when comparing Champions then and now...

Kelly Kelly: 5' 5", 108 pounds

Trish Stratus: 5' 4", about 135 pounds, though billed as 125.

Kelly's an inch taller than Trish, and 27 pounds lighter than Trish was when she was there.

But, we can see where all of Trish's pounds were...









All that muscle mass made her heavier. But, all that mass was good for her because, after all, she was the Women's Champion.

Seeing some comments from people who are obviously primarily familiar with the current Diva product regarding Trish's face in this segment was interesting. Some of these guys were certain that had to be make-up related to a storyline, because their top Diva wouldn't possibly be walking around all day and on camera if she was really looking like that...

Well, no, we'd never see Kelly like that. But, the bruises were real, from a house show match. Trish wasn't looking like that at the end of one Raw, and the next one...

When an interviewer asked about the black eye, she called it "a badge of honor." She also happened to be working that match, not to mention that entire several month feud with Lita that came before, and the subsequent feud with Christy that would go for the next two months, with a herniated disc. That's part of what made her Trish F'n Stratus.

And eye candy being all that's important, now? Trish, the two other wrestlers she was in that match with, and the redhead wrestler that was her main feud at the time, weren't hard on the eyes. In fact, I think they were sexier than the current crop, and they all had their own unique look. Compare to most of the current crop that dress alike, do their hair the same, just don't stand out from each other.

Now, granted, none of the other wrestlers got as over with the crowds as Trish and Lita did. That's no reason to have just given up on the Women's Division entirely. While the other wrestlers didn't get the reaction a Trish or Lita match got, they sure as hell got more reaction than what we're seeing, today.

A. I don't see why Trish was brought into this conversation when it's not even about her.

B. get divas that can wrestle, and the bitching will go away :D

I brought Trish up for two reasons. One, because it's the era she defined that's our point of comparison, why we say the current era sucks compared to the way it used to be. If we were using the era just before it as our point of comparison, and this match for the Women's Championship, and the amazing wrestling skills on display...

...we wouldn't be griping about Kelly, now. And, as we can see, the Women's Division has survived worse things than Kelly Kelly. If it could come back from that, it can come back from this.

And such humble beginnings for that particular belt, too. Who could have forseen the classics it woud one day be fought for... The butterfly belt can take heart and have hope for the future.

The second reason I brought up Trish and Lita is they're, indirectly, the reasons for the change in direction. If the Champions after them had gotten the crowd response they did, they'd have kept things as they were. They weren't, so they tried something different.

Fortunately, if you dislike the current direction, that's going over even less. Sure, a Beth match may not have gotten a lot of crowd noise, but people didn't immidiately declare "Bathroom break" when one of her title matches was listed on the card. So, sooner or later, Vince will wake up and they'll try something different, again.

When that time comes, plenty of us have been offering free advice. Trish and Lita had their own suggestions for what both the company and the Divas, themselves, should do to get them over. That's the advice I think they should follow. After all, who knows more about how to get the Divas over than those two?

Alicia vs Nattie from superstars showed us a glimpse of what the division could be like if it were given that length and focus. After seeing that match, I'd rank Alicia up there with Nattie, Beth, Melina, Gail in the op tier wrestling category, WHO SHOULD BE THE FACES OF THE DIVAS DIVISION.

And the funny thing about all of them? All of them have different looks. Alicia the dark redhead, Nattie the blonde Hart with the colorful attires, Beth the Glamazon and big diva, Melina the dark haired vixen, Gail the asian girl.

Smackdown is definitely the better brand whereas Raw seems more the eye candy. The talents there, they just need to give more time to them and develop actual storylines. Yeah Kellys a crap champion but there's been loads of them before see Hervina, Candice etc.
