Welcome to Diva Dirt’s This Week in History, where each week we’ll take a look back at some of the most memorable moments in women’s wrestling from years gone by.
So, join us in taking a trip down memory lane…
*September 20th, 1999 | Most remember Stephanie McMahon the wrestler as a spoiled heel who had the Women’s Championship practically handed to her on a silver platter. However, Stephanie’s very first match found her as an innocent babyface, teaming with her fiance Test to take on the team of Debra and Jeff Jarret. She didn’t break a sweat (or perform a single move) but managed to score the pin for her team, foreshadowing the kind of strategy that would eventually win her the Women’s Championship.
*September 20th, 2004 | The first edition of the WWE Diva Search was a study in silly competitions and vicious trash talking, yet we found ourselves on the edge of our seat when the time came to crown the winner. Would it be Carmella, the girl everyone loved to hate, or fiesty Christy? You know the answer to that, of course: Christy won the competition and earned herself a contract with the WWE. Christy may have not outlasted other Diva Search alumni (such as Ashley, Eve, Layla, Maria, Maryse, Michelle and Rosa) in time spent with the WWE, but she’ll always be known as the first one to win it all.
*September 21st, 2007 | Weddings in wrestling are like weddings on soap operas: you just know something is going to go awry. When Kristal Marshall wed Teddy Long, complete with Diva bridesmaids, we were fully expecting a scandalous objection or wedding-halting fight. What we weren’t expecting was a medical emergency: Teddy Long, just as he was about to say “I do”, suffered a heart attack and collapsed in the middle of the ring, giving the wedding an end that would befit a soap opera.
*September 20th, 2009 | With TNA’s No Surrender PPV came the final of an 8-team tournament to crown the first ever Knockouts Tag Team Champions. Taylor Wilde and Sarita beat Madison Rayne and Velvet Sky to take the honors and their place in the history books. In our humble opinion, they deserved a separate championship alone for that choreographed entrance.
*September 21st, 2009 | For over 10 years Lilian Garcia was a constant presence in the WWE, whether she was interviewing, singing or ring announcing. She couldn’t do it forever, though, and the day came when she bid farewell to the WWE. In a classy move, the WWE gave Lilian time on Raw to say goodbye to the fans, recount her favorite moments and thank everyone for their support. It’s been two years, but we still find ourselves, out of habit, looking for Lilian in the corner of the ring.
*September 19th, 2010 | At Night of Champions, in a match that unified the Women’s and Divas Titles, Michelle McCool defeated Melina and left with both belts. The addition of “lumberjills”, while an unnecessary move 9 times out of 10, allowed the Divas roster to be present at what was major change in the division. It was a bittersweet moment, seeing the Women’s Championship take its final bow. We still find ourselves missing it and its distinct lack of butterflies. ----------------------------So what was your favorite thing that happened this week in diva history? | |
