In the last year the number of World of Warcraft subscribers has fallen in the from 12 million to 10.3 million.
The game's developer, Blizzard, announced yesterday that between July and September 800,000 players left. This is a sharp decline compared to October last year, when the game reached a peak with 12 million users.
The decline began earlier this year, as the number of subscribers slipped to 11.4 million, dropping to 11.1 by July.
The CEO of Blizzard, Mike Morhaime, revealed in a conference call attended by Gamasutra that the decline came mainly from the East, yet he added that WoW remains "one of the most popular online games in China, and by far the most popular subscription-based MMO in the world."
But laurels aren't being rested upon. "That said, we know there are improvements that we can make in the game content," said Morhaime.
In addition to the recently-announced expansion pack, Mists of Pandaria, Blizzard will launch a content update pack in the next few weeks. According to Morhaime, the release is "not intended to go out and drive new user acquisition, that's a whole other strategy. But it does drive engagement with the game, and so that will impact churn if we do it successfully, and will eventually drive winback, as players tell each other about the content they're enjoying."

| LOL Dead.
I was reading some of the comments on IGN and this one kinda made sense:
danunited:
"It annoys me when people consider MMO players as sad. I personaly dont play them just because im not a fan of them as simple as that. If someone who plays your typical xbox or ps3 game 5hours a day there is no harm done but as soon as you have an account in any MMO you get labled as someone who is sad with no social life even if you are a casual gamer. Take COD for example. How is playing the same 10maps over and over again to level up any differnt to leveling up in WoW? yet spending hours on COD a day is considerd normal. My point is a game is a game and if you shouldnt worship your life to it no matter what the genre."
So yeah I think their point is valid; it doesn't matter what the game or past time is but if one is spending too much time on it can get weird.

| thing is, playing COD can get boring really quick, unless you're a fanboy and act like its the greatest game ever made (and yeah, there are ppl out there like that). Ppl that play WoW tend to never leave their house, on the Raptr site (which tracks gameplay hours) ive seen people log over 1,000 hours of gameplay on that one game alone. the only reason why people may play console games for like 5 hours at a time, is because it can make you nauseated (spelling?) after a while. | |

| Well yeah 1,000 hours spent on a game is taking it WAY too far but some games are so massive you can easily get 100 hours [not in a week of course like over 1+ years] on them.
Elder Scrolls at least can do that if you do enough of the main quest, side quest, general stuff.
